A 20-year member of the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Department staff, Jim Mullins was tabbed Assistant Director of Athletics for Compliance for the department since January 2015 after serving as Compliance Officer for five years. Prior to taking over his new duties, he served as an Administrative Assistant for Promotion and Information and prior to that was Assistant Director of Sports Information and Daily News since joining the department in 1994.
The Compliance Officer reports to the Director of Athletics with responsibility for ensuring Athletic Department compliance with NCAA rules and by-laws, as well as compliance with university and department policies and procedures. He is also responsible for certifying the eligibility of the more than 500 student-athletes in the Athletic Department, through the monitoring of grades on a semester by semester basis. He is responsible for providing the NCAA with compliance-related information and documentation on behalf of the department, including the reporting of violations to the NCAA.
Mullins serves as the chair of the Little East Conference Compliance Officers working group and is also a member of a similar group representing compliance officers in the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference. He has attended several NCAA Regional Rules national meetings and has also participated in conference sponsored educational meetings as well.
During his service prior to moving into compliance, he was involved in many aspects of the Athletic Department operations in his other positions. Among those duties were publications, game management, communications and creating and overseeing the department website.
Active in campus affairs, Mullins has served on several campus-wide search and screen committees as well as volunteering to serve on campus planning committees. He serves as the Master of Ceremonies for the annual Fourth of July celebration on campus as well as serving in a similar capacity for the UMass Dartmouth and Little East Conference Halls of Fame.
In addition to his Athletic Department duties, he is a member of the UMass Dartmouth Faculty Federation’s Educational Services Unit, the union representing the professional staff on campus. Among his duties with the ESU are serving as Grievance Officer since 2009 and as a member of the ESU contract negotiating team.
A 1981 graduate of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Mullins earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Studies.
