UMASS FOOTBALL TEAM CREATES POSITIVE NEWS WITH BONE MARROW EVENT

After days and weeks of negative publicity about the UMass Dartmouth campus, the Corsair football team was in the spotlight for something good. DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT ATTRACTS MORE AND MORE ATTENTION

A sure sign of a successfull event is when attention starts to build upon itself. Already a well-known project of a UMass Dartmouth Sports Marketing class with several Corsair student-athletes inovolved, the upcoming Dodge Ball Fundraising Tournament has not attracted the attention of the New England Patriots.  Running back Stevan Ridley has entered a team into the competition and The Herald News has a story about his team in the April 24th edition. TEAM DOCTOR JEREMY STERN AND HIS WIFE HONORED BY MASS. MEDICAL SOCIETY

Among his many services to his profession and his community, Dr. Jeremy Stern has served as the Athletic Department team doctor for almost 20 years. That service earned Dr. Stern the 2013 Community Clinician of the Year for the Bristol South District Medical Society. Dr. Stern along with his wife Dr. Wendy Stern were both honored for their service to the community.  Dr. Jeremy Stern is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine. Dr. Wendy Stern is a board-certified otolaryngologist and head and neck surgeon in the Dartmouth area.

UMD SPORTS MARKETING CLASS ORGANIZES DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT IN FALL RIVER

Several Corsair student-athletes are part of a Sports Marketing class at UMass Dartmouth which is organizing an annual dodgeball tournament to benefit a handful of local organizations including Boys and Girls Club of Fall River, the Fall River Children's Museum, the YMCA and the Fall River middle school intramural sports programs. 

The third annual Dodgeballin’ for Kids fundraiser is slated to take place at noon on April 27 at B.M.C. Durfee High School. Among those participating in the planning are Lauren O'Brien and Taryn Cardiel from field hockey, Mike Rotondo from men's basketball and Colleen Moriarity from women's basketball. CORSAIR COACHES CROSS STATE LINES IN SEARCH OF TOP RECRUITS

In the never-ending chase to find the next class of high quality student-athlete recruits, some UMass Dartmouth coaches are finding success beyond the state’s borders.

Ice hockey coach John Rolli has had the most success this year with 13 of his 28 players listing hometowns outside of Massachusetts, including three from Canada and Dimitry Antipin, who wins the prize for being the furthest from home, hailing from Novosibirsk, Siberia.

But Rolli isn’t the only coach to make some long-distance phone calls and in some cases visit out of state locations. A recent story in the UMass Dartmouth A+F Newsletter details some of the far-flung recruiting efforts by the Corsair coaching staff. Click this link for the complete story.

UMASS DARTMOUTH LACROSSE GETTING NOTICED BY THE BOSTON GLOBE

The story of UMass Dartmouth men's lacrosse success is starting to get a lot of notice beyond Cressy Field. Coach Kevin Mahoney has been actively recruiting throughout the Massachusetts lacrosse hotbeds and has brought in a handful of very talented players. One of they key's to this season has been the return of Jordan MacPherson who suffered a season-ending injury a year ago. TRIPP CENTER TO HOST A PAIR OF COMMUNITY SPONSORED EVENTS

Basketball season may be over but the Tripp Center will continue to be a busy place over the next few weekends.  On Saturday, March 16, the athletic center will host the 5th annual Miles For Smiles walk-bike-run-skate event to benefit the Southcoast Mentoring Initiative for Learning, Education and Service (SMILES). The following Saturday, March 23, Bristol County DA Sam Sutter and UMass Dartmouth Athletics will co-sponsor the 3rd annual Family Fitness and Fun day.  The event is designed to promote healthy living, nutrition education, family building and wellness. FITNESS EXPANSION PROJECT UNDERWAY WITH TREE CLEARING ON SITE

The planned $5million dollar expansion of the UMD Fitness Center got off to a noisy start on the west side of the Tripp Athletic Center this morning. Workers began thinning the trees between the existing center and Ring Road in preparation for the first ground-breaking of the project. Page Construction is also onsite to install temporary fencing around the site. As a result of the construction, expected to be completed for Fall 2013, the Fitness Center has new temporary entrances. Entry can be gained through the Tripp Cener lobby using stairs to the ground level or the rear doors next to the softball field

UMD ASSISTANT VICE CHANCELLOR FOR ALUMNI AFFAIRS LORI JACQUES RECEIVES HONOR

Most people around the UMass Dartmouth campus know Lori Jacques in her role as the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Alumni Relations. In her time on campus, she has been a familiar face around the Tripp Athletic Center supporting the Corsair athletic teams.  Turns out she has more than just a passing interest in collegiate athletics.

In a recent story story in the Pocono (PA) Record, East Stroudsburg State announced the NCAA's recognition of Jacques' career as a student-athlete. "Former East Stroudsburg University women's basketball standout Lori Pio Jacques '96 master's 00 has been named to the 40th Anniversary Tribute Team as part of the NCAA's celebration of Division II athletics throughout 2013.

Jacques, a 2006 inductee to the ESU Athletic Hall of Fame, was also a member of the Warriors' 1994-95 PSAC championship team which was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 2010. She graduated from ESU in 1996 with a bachelor's degree in Management, and returned for her Master of Education in Health and Physical Education with a concentration in Sport Management in 2000. She is currently the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Alumni Relations at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth."  The complete release from ESU can be found at this link.

MEN'S SWIMMER FEATURED IN NEWSPAPER STORY ABOUT BIOENGINEERING MAJOR

UMass Dartmouth men's swimmer Julian Jiminian was one of the students featured in a Standard-Times story today featuring the new bioengineering major on campus. Click here to read Matt Camara's story about professor Christopher Brigham's class who was recently hired  as a bioengineering professor. According to Camara's story, "The bioengineering field combines material from several scientific disciplines such as biology, mechanical engineering and more to prepare graduates for careers designing medical devices, artificial tissue, pharmaceuticals and more." Jiminian's picture appeared on the front page of The Standard-Times conducting an experiment in class.

CORSAIR WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ACCOMPLISHMENTS FEATURED IN THE BOSTON GLOBE

Even before UMass Dartmouth's women's basketball team picked up its eighth win in nine games Wed. night against Eastern Nazarene, 68-39, the Corsairs had started to get some attention from the Boston area media. As the new year of 2013 begins it won't be long before the Corsair sports teams are back in action. Men's basketball hosts Regis College on Wed., Jan 3 at 7 pm while the women's basketball team is on the road that same night at Eastern Nazarene at 6 pm. On Friday night, the Corsair ice hockey team will compete in the Northland Savings Bank Holiday Tournament, opening with Neumann at 4 pm. The tournament is hosted by Norwich University in Northfield, VT.

The Corsair field hockey team's third invitation to the NCAA Div. SPORTS TEAMS TAKE A BREAK DURING FINAL EXAMS AND HOLIDAY SEASON

With the UMass Dartmouth men's basketball game at Johnson & Wales last night, the winter sports season comes to the holiday break. Final exams begin on campus today and continue through Dec. 18.  Action resumes on Wed. Jan 2, 2013 when the men's basketball team will host Regis in a 7 pm game at the Tripp Center. The women's basketball team will be on the road that same night at Eastern Nazarene for a 6 pm start.

ALL-TIME UMASS DARTMOUTH COACHING RECORDS NOW POSTED ONLINE

Ever wonder which Corsair coach won the most games during his or her career. How about which coach has the best winning percentage or how many coaches have reached 100-career victories. The answer to these and many other sports trivia questions can now be found on the Athletic Department web site under the Corsair Sports History link listed under Inside Athletics. Combining the won-loss records of coaches dating back to the beginning of athletics on the Dartmouth campus in 1966-67, the data base contains records of coaches for sports which have competed in single competition events. Only events where a win, loss or tie has been recorded are kept in this list. Some sports compete mainly in invitational-type events where wins and losses are not determined.  Take a look at the lists and be the first to stump a fellow Corsair sports fan with this question: How many Corsair coaches since 1966-67 have reached 100 career wins. Ill give you a hint - there are 15. But can you name them all?

UMD ALUM WHO CARVED CORSAIR IN TRIPP CENTER MAKES NATIONAL TV DEBUT

If you have ever walked into the Tripp Center lobby and noticed the 6-foot tall Corsair wood carving, you might wonder how it got there. It was carved and donated to the Athletic Department by UMass Dartmouth Alum Jesse Green, Class of 2000.He carved the 400-pound sculpture during Homecoming 2008. Now the rest of the country knows about Green and his chainsaw art because the National Geographic Channel has picked up a reality TV series based on his work. Green hit the national stage last night and will be back on the National Geographic Channel on December 6. To learn more about the series, you can go to the National Geographic web site.

FITNESS CENTER INSTRUCTOR COMPETES IN INTERNATIONAL KARATE EVENT

Fitness Center Instructor Donna Bosworth recently represented Team USA at the World Karate Council, an international competition held in Montreal, Canada.  Competitors ranged from 10 years old to over 42 years old and hailed from 12 different countries.   Boswoth placed third in her age group in Traditional Weapons.  This is an impressive accomplishment that speaks volumes about the dedication and perseverance Donna devotes to training for her craft. She has been involved in karate for 14 years and competing in Traditional Forms and Traditional Weapons for half that time.  Bosworth became interested when her children started participating in karate.  An active yoga, pilates, and spin instructor, including three year at the UMD Fitness Center,  the physicality as well as the discipline involved in karate appealed to her.  Now, 14 years later, this group fitness instructor and mother of four holds a Third Degree Black Belt in American Kempo as well as several other national and overall point titles.

UMD FITNESS CENTER PARTICIPATING IN 4TH ANNUAL GIFT OF GIVING  FOOD DRIVE

The UMass Dartmouth Fitness Center is participating in the 4th annual Gift of Giving Holiday Donation Food Drive sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs. The Fitness Center is one of  several drop-off locations on the campus,  beginning Monday, Nov. 26 and concluding Friday, Dec. 14.  The Fitness Center staff is asking  students, faculty, and staff to bring at least one canned good or unopened food product for donation - 1 workout, 1 donation, 1 time. Any help from the Athletic Dept. staff, student-athletes or campus community would be greatly appreciated during this holiday season.

BOSTON GLOBE STORY HIGHLIGHTS CORSAIR FIELD HOCKEY PLAYERS

Two UMass Dartmouth field hockey players were featured in a story appearing in The Boston Globe on Nov. 17. Beverly, MA native Jenna Miedzionoski and her teammate Taryn Cardiel were the focus of a story about the role the two players played in the Corsairs' recently successful field hockey season. UMass Dartmouth captured both the regular season and conference tournament championships in the Little East Conference and earned a third NCAA invitation in the last four years. UMASS DARTMOUTH FITNESS CENTER EXPANSION TAKES A BIG STEP FORWARD

The $3.6 million dollar UMass Dartmouth Fitness Center expansion project took a big step forward this morning with a pre-bid briefing and walk-thru of the Tripp Athletic Center today. According to a UMass Building Authority legal notice appearing in The Fall River Herald News on Nov. 15, 2012, the authority has begun the process for accepting sealed bids from Contractors and Filed-Sub-Bid Contractors for the project described as, "Addition and Rennovation to the Tripp Fitness Center." The legal notice described the project as providing additional weight training areas, multi-purpose rooms, fitness spaces and locker rooms. Bids for various trades will be opened later in November and early December.

UMASS DARTMOUTH'S BRIAN BAPTISTE IN LEC INAUGURAL HALL OF FAME CLASS

When the Little East Conference inducted its first Hall of Fame Class on Saturday night, Oct. 27, UMass Dartmouth men's basketball coach Brian Baptiste was included in the prestigious inaugural class of honorees. Baptiste along with Southern Maine women's basketball coach Gary Fifield were the first two head coaches inducted into the LEC Hall of Fame. Baptiste was honored for his 29 years as the Corsair men's head basketball coach and a career filled with honors incluidng seven LEC Coach of the Year honors.

Lowell resident Katelyn Elliott Griffin's induction into the Corsair Hall of Fame last month was included in a recent edition of the The Lowell Sun. Katelyn was part of the Corsair Hall of Fame's Class of 2012 which was inducted as part of the 25th anniversary celebration of the Corsair Hall of Fame during Homecoming Weekend in September.

RALPH BROWN STEPS DOWN FROM DUTIES ORGANIZING SHRINE DAY AT UMASS DARTMOUTH

Word has reached the Tripp Athletic Center that Ralph Brown, the driving force behind the 10-year relationship between the Athletic Department and the Southeastern Massachusetts Shrine Club has stepped down from his duties organizing the annual Shrine Day activities at UMass Dartmouth. Brown was instrumental in workign with the late Bob Mullen to initiate the Shrine Club's support of the annual cross country invitational races. The Shrine Day event was one of the club's largest fundraising projects each year. Brown was recognized by the Athletic Department for his work on Shrine Day when he was presented with the 2005 John Frye Servcie Award. Congratulations on a job well done to Ralph Brown.

CORSAIR HALL OF FAME RECEIVES BRADFORD DURFEE TECH VARSITY LETTER DONATION

A special thanks has to go out to former SMU football assistant coach Charlie Connell for his recent donations to the Corsair Hall of Fame.  Connell was the presenter for Matt Quinn at last month's Corsair Hall of Fame induction ceremony and while preparing for the event, Connell toured the new Hall of Fame in the Tripp Center lobby.  A Bradford Durfee Tech alum, Connell offered that he had a Bradford Durfee Tech varsity sports letter in his personal collection. Informed that the Hall of Fame was seeking both a Bradford Durfee letter as well as a New Bedford Tech letter, Connell dropped off his letter for display in the Hall of Fame this week. He also donated some clothing and other apparel from his days as an SMU Club Football coach.  The Corsair Hall of Fame is still in search of a New Bedford Tech varsity sports letter. LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT CENTRAL IS THE PLACE TO BE

This week begins tournament time for Fall sports in the Little East Conference. With strong showings continuing from several Corsair teams, the LEC Tournaments are going to be worth following. Corsair sports fans should point their web browsers at LEC Tournament Central for up to date information, pairings, tournament brackets and scores. Women's tennis will open the Corsairs' LEC Tournament action this week when the second-ranked UMass Dartmouth hosts the winner of Worcester State - Salem State winner on Thursday at 3 pm.

FOUR UMASS DARTMOUTH TEAMS SHARE FIRST PLACE IN LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE

As September turns into October, four UMass Dartmouth fall sport teams find themselves  sharing first-place in the Little East Conference standings. All four teams, men's and women's soccer, field hockey and women's tennis each have pefect LEC regular season records as well. Leading the way with a perfect 5-0 mark (9-0) overall) is the Corsair women's tennis team. Joining them at 5-0 in the LEC is the field hockey team (6-3 overall). Both soccer teams are in first place as the women are 3-0 (8-1-1 overall), while the men are 7-2 overall.

2012 CORSAIR HALL OF FAME TICKETS ON SALE AT ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT

Tickets for the 25th anniversary Corsair Hall of Fame Dinner and Induction Ceremony are now on sale in the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Department. The event will take place on campus, Friday, Sept. 21, 2012. The 25th anniversary induction class includes representatives from UMass Dartmouth and one of its predecessor institutions, Southeastern Massachusetts University (SMU). Joining the Corsair Hall of Fame this year will be Glen Nieuwenhuis (SMU ’73), Matt Quinn (SMU ’87), Daniel Petrone-Morley (UMD ’03), Robin (Dziedzic) Drew (UMD ’07) and Katelyn (Elliott) Griffin. The 2000-01 UMass Dartmouth men’s basketball squad which lead the nation in winning percentage that season will be this year’s inductee in the team category.

FORMER CORSAIR FIELD HOCKEY PLAYER AMY GUERIN WINS BODYBUILDING TITLE

Amy Guerin was a 2007 graduate of UMass Dartmouth and a member of the Corsairs field hockey team while she was an undergraduate.  According to a story in today's Lowell Sun, she has ramped up her athletic abilities by becoming a serious body builder.  Here is the lead to today's story, "Amy Guerin is the type of person who likes to be disciplined and set goals for herself. She's also always been into fitness and being active. She's now found a way to meet that criteria with something she happens to be very good at: competitive bodybuilding. The 27-year-old of Chelmsford, only two years into bodybuilding -- working out five to six times a week, sticking to a strict diet -- took first place in a show in Atlantic City, N.J., last month for a bodybuilding bikini division and second place in the modeling division." CORSAIR CLIPPINGS RETURNS FOR 2012-13 SPORTS SEASON

When the referee blows his whistle to start the UMass Dartmouth vs. Coast Guard men's soccer game at Southern Maine this afternoon shortly after 4 pm, that will signal the beginning of the 2012-13 sports season for the Corsairs. Coach Henry Almeida's team will open with a pair of games in the Southern Maine Soccer Classic this weekend. At 7 pm tonight, the Corsair football team opens its season at Mount Ida. KRISTA CHAUVIN TO COMPETE AT NCAA DIV. III TRACK NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Sophomore Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, MA) has travelled to Claremont, California to compete in the 2012 NCAA Division III Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships being held May 24-26. Chauvin will compete  on Friday, May 25 at 5 pm (8 pm Eastern Time) in Flight #1 of the Women's Hammer Throw, qualifying for nationals with a throw of 53.98 meters earlier this season.  The top nine throws (out of 11) from the two flights will advance to the final round. Chauvin is seeded 7th in the 22-person field. Live results will be posted through the NCAA by following this link throughout the championship event.

CORSAIR ATHLETE PAINTS ATHLETIC LOGO ON THIRD BASE SOFTBALL DUGOUT

Traffic entering the access road to the Tripp Athletic Center is now greeted by an oversized version of the Corsair Athletic Department logo painted on the back of the third base softball dugout. The painting is the handiwork of Corsair senior volleyball player Cami Ascher (Natick, MA). A graduating senior this Spring, Ascher earned a Bachelor in Fine Arts degree in Art Education in additon to winning four varsity award letters as a member of the Corsair volleyball team. Ascher started the free-hand art work earlier this semester and just recently put the finishing touches on her most recent piece of art.

5th ANNUAL UMASS DARTMOUTH FITNESS CENTER FIELD DAY SET FOR MAY 11

Calling all athletes on the UMass Dartmouth campus. The 5th annual Field Day competition is waiting for your registration.  The event is a fun-filled 10-event team competition which has something for everyone. Teams are co-ed with a 2/2 format preferred. The top male and female scores are combined to make up a team score. Events include: 4x100 Relay, Tire Flip, Medicine Ball Toss, Obstacle Course, Tug-O-War, Team Building games and much more. The event will take place Friday, May 11 from 5 pm to 9 pm at Cressy Field.

THREE NEW TROPHIES FOR CORSAIR HALL OF FAME DISPLAY CASE

There will have to be some rearranging of championship trophies in the Corsair Hall of Fame display case located in the Tripp Center lobby. Opened this past January, the Corsair Hall of Fame has three trophy display cases with the front case containing the most recent championship trophies captured by Corsair teams. In the past two week three new trophies have been awarded to UMass Dartmouth including a pair for the men's track team (LEC and New England Alliance) and the most recent, an LEC Tournament title for the men's tennis team. The men's indoor track team added the two most recent trophies winning the LEC and NE Alliance indoor titles earlier this year.

1957 HALL OF FAME TEAM MEMBER FROM NEW BEDFORD TECH FINALLY GETS AWARD

When Ron Wade (New Bedford Tech '58) heard his 1957 NB Tech men's tennis team was getting inducted into the Corsair Hall of Fame in 2007 he was a little disappointed. He couldn't attend the ceremony because of other obligations. Earlier this year, Wade, a former Fairhaven resident who now lives outside Washington, DC, attended a UMass Dartmouth Alumni gathering and met Assistant Vice Chancellor for Alumni Relations Lori Jacques. Wade mentioned his team induction to Jacques and she invited him to stop by the campus to visit the new Corsair Hall of Fame on his next visit to the area. Wade was in town this week and visited the Hall of Fame with Jacques, also meeting with Corsair men's tennis coach Tom Mendell and Athletic Director Ian Day. And after a quick tour of the Hall, Day and Coach Mendell presented Wade with the Hall of Fame team certificate he wasn't able to accept in person five years ago.

TRIPP CENTER SOLAR PANELS PART OF CAMPUS GREEN ENERGY CAMPAIGN

The Tripp Athletic Center has been home to the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Department for more than 40 years, having celebrated the formal grand opening last February 26. But now the athletic center is part of a 21st century technology to create clean energy for the campus. As detailed in today's Fall River Herald News story, the roof of the Tripp Center contains recently installed solar panels which are one part of the campus efforts to generate clean energy. FORMER AD BOB DOWD'S SON RUNS BOSTON MARATHON FOR SPECIAL CAUSE

The Standard-Times carried a story about the son of former UMass Dartmouth Athletic Director Bob Dowd's son, Jim Dowd, who competed in Monday's Boston Marathon for a special cause.  As Tim Weisberg's story pointed out, Jim was running for a good time and also to raise awareness for Rett Syndrome, which has afflicted his younger sister Cathy, a New Bedford resident.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE TO HOLD ROAD RACE APRIL 22ND

The UMass Dartmouthy Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will host its first major event when it hosts the First Annual Ring Road for Champions 5K on Sunday, April 22 at 10 am.  The 5K race will take place on Ring Road around the UMass Dartmouth campus with proceeds going to Special Olympics.

CORSAIR WOMEN'S SOCCER PROGRAM TO HOST SKILLS CLINIC

The public is invited to attend a soccer skills clinic for women's soccer players hosted by the UMass Dartmouth women's soccer team. The clinic will be held at UMass Dartmouth on Thursday, April 19 during the school vacation week. The skill clinic will get underway at 1 pm and conclude at 3:30 pm. The clinic costs $25 per player.

EMILY MIGRE WRITES ABOUT NCAA DIVISION III ATHLETICS IN DART MAGAZINE

When it comes to the subject of NCAA Division III athletics who better to write about the student-athlete experience than a four-year letter winner and a Little East Conference Winter All-Academic Team honoree. Emily Migre, a member of the UMass Dartmouth women's indoor and outdoor track and field team, wrote about a subject of which she is quite familiar in the Fall 2011 edition of Dart Magazine.  Migre wrote about the NCAA Division III experience by interviewing Robert Yarbough, a member of the Corsair track and football teams. Dart Magazine is an academic collaboration of Dr. Kara Miller's English 453/650 Intensive Magazine Journalism class and Dr. Anthony Arrigo's English 621 Document Design and Editing Class. BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL TRY CHANGING THEIR LUCK AT HOME

Baseball coach Bob Prince and softball coach Amy Sasin are giving their team a new perspective when they play home games this season. Both spring sport coaches have moved their respective dugouts for the 2012 season with baseball switching from first base to third base, while softball moved from third to first. So far the moves have paid off for both teams. Baseball is 4-1 at home this season in the new dugout, while softball took its home opener before splitting a doubleheader with UMass Boston on Sunday.

LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE BASEBALL TO OPEN ONE DAY EARLY

The 2012 LEC baseball season will get started a day earlier than planned with some encouragement from Mother Nature. With a wet forecast set for Saturday, March 31, the schedule conference opening weekend, UMass Dartmouth and Plymouth State decided to move their LEC opener ahead by one day. The Corsairs and Panthers will play their first LEC contests this afternoon at UMass Dartmouth, beginning with the first of two games at 12 noon.

JIMMY TINGLE TALKS ABOUT HIS SMU DAYS PLAYING BASKETBALL AT THE TRIPP CENTER

While he was in the Fall River area for a fundraising comedy show recently, Cambridge comedian  and SMU graduate Jimmy Tingle, talked about some of his best memories on the Dartmouth campus. While appearing in "Ten From the Line", hosted by Herald News Sportswriter Greg Sullivan, Tingle remembered playing basketball at the Tripp Center. A former starting point guard at then Cambridge Latin High School in 1973, Tingle said he tried out for the freshman basketball team at SMU but said, "That's another comedy show." CORSAIR TEAMS RETURN FROM SPRING TRIPS

With their Spring trips completed, the athletes have returned to campus this week as the Corsair sports season gets into full gear this week. Three teams will be in action starting Tuesday, March 27, including the season-opener for men's tennis against Becker at 3 pm.  Baseball has a single game at Johnson & Wales at 3:30 pm and women's lacrosse travels to Worcester State for a 4 pm game.

CORSAIR FIELD HOCKEY CAPTAIN TAKES ON DODGEBALL FUNDRAISING PROJECT

UMass Dartmouth field hockey captain Jenna Miedzionski is serving as Tournament Director for theDodgeballin' For Kids Fundraiser to be held at Durfee HS in Fall River on April 21. Miedzionski is taking on the role as part of a class assignment in her Sports Marketing class. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Children's Museum of Greater Fall River as well as the Boys and Girls Club of Fall River and the YMCA.

LATE ROSTER ADDITION SCORES A GOAL IN HER FIRST GAME BACK IN 4 YEARS

When women's lacrosse coach Sarah Booker started looking around to replace the injured Allison O'Rourke who was hurt in the Corsairs first game of the season, she was contacted by a former player who had not played since the 2007 season. But it didn't take Leanne Canillas very long to get acclimated to her sport. After being added to the roster a week before leaving for the Florida Spring trip, Canillas scored a goal in the Corsairs' 16-7 loss to University of New England.

FAMILY CONNECTIONS RUN DEEP FOR CORSAIR TEAMS

A close reading of the UMass Dartmouth boxscore from the Corsairs' 7-3 win in Florida over St. Olaf shows the pitching victory was credited to Tyler White. A transfer student from Massasoit CC, White played his high school baseball in nearby Westport. Corsair baseball fans know Tyler to be the son of another former Corsair standout baseball player and assistant coach Ray White from the late 1970's. The father/son team of Ray and Tyler are the second family connection for the Corsairs this year. The women's basketball team was led this season by junior Colleen Moriarity of Canton. A Second-Team All-LEC selection this past season, Colleen is the daughter of another former Corsair baseball player, Dermot Moriarity, a member of the Corsair Hall of Fame.

UMASS DARTMOUTH BASEBALL RETURNS TO FAMILIAR BALL PARK IN FLORIDA

Fans of the Boston Red Sox remember a time when the dateline for spring training baseball strories read Winter Haven and not Fort Myers. And one check of the Corsairs' baseball schedule for today reminds some Red Sox fans of the ball park in Winter Haven where the Red Sox used to play. Chain O'Lakes Park will be the site today of a UMass Dartmouth doubleheader in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The Corsairs will play a pair of seven-inning games against Trinity (CT) College with the opener set for 12 noon.

TWO ROOKIE COACHES ARE SUCCESSFUL IN THEIR DEBUTS

A pair of first-year UMass Dartmouth coaches were successful in their coaching debuts this Spring. Women's lacrosse coach Sarah Booker and baseball coach Bob Prince both brought home their first career head coaching victories.  Booker won her first game as a collegiate head coach on Mar. 8 when the Corsairs defeated Mount Ida, 12-10.  Prince earned his first collegiate win on Tuesday when UMass Dartmouth swept a non-conference doubleheader at Eastern Nazarene by the scores of 2-0 and 6-2.

FORMER ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR LOUISE GOODRUM HONORED POSTHUMOUSLY

Former UMass Dartmouth Associate Director Louise Goodrum received a prestigious campus award posthumously on campus Thursday afternoon. Goodrum was presented with an Outstanding Woman's Award presented annually to a member of the UMass Dartmouth campus staff. The event took place at the 12th annual celebration of International Women's Day and was sponosred by the UMass Dartmouth Center for Women, Gender & Sexuality. The award was accepted by Louise's brothers, Dr. Philip Goodrum and Ralph Goodrum.

KEN FURTADO RECIEVES CASE HIGH SCHOOL HALL OF FAME SELCTION

Ken Furtado is already a member of the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Hall of Fame. On May 20 the former Corsair athlete and coach will be able to add the Case HS Hall of Fame to his resume.  Fonseca will be part of the Class of 2012 inductees in recognition for his efforts as a former Cardinals coach for many years. Fonseca is credited with starting the Case ice hockey program in 1974 and he also started the men's soccer program. Fonseca also coached softball and field hockey for the Cardinals while serving as an assistant coach for Corsair softball as well. He is currently works in the UMass Dartmouth equipment room.
