Alexandra Koury Advances to Zone 1 Championships

TIVERTON, R.I. – UMass Dartmouth senior Alexandra Koury (Holden, Mass.) solidified a spot in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone 1 Championships last Saturday, placing second in novice flat to pace the UMass Dartmouth equestrian squad at the Region 1 Championship held at Claddagh Farm.

Koury will be competing in her first career Zone Championship on April 9 at Mount Holyoke in South Hadley, Mass. Under head coach Mary Charette, UMass Dartmouth has now sent at least one rider to Zones in the past three seasons.

Four other Corsairs represented the team in Regional competition on Saturday. Senior Colleen Waclawik (Millis, Mass.) and junior Natasha Zuzarte (Tiverton, R.I.) each collected third place finishes, with Waclawik competing in intermediate flat and Zuzarte in intermediate fences.

Freshman Shelby Cunningham (Mattapoisett, Mass.) collected a fourth-place finish in walk trot, while junior Kira Hallberg (Foxboro, Mass.) took eighth in walk trot canter.

Each Region in Zone 1 will send two individual riders and one team to its respective Zone Championship. From there, the top two individuals and top teams will advance to compete in the 2016 IHSA National Championships.
