BUZZARDS BAY, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's sailing team performed well at the Admiral Alymers event, hosted by Massachusetts Maritime Academy this weekend. Corsair sailors Maggie McDonald (Jr. Douglas, MA/Douglas HS), Kelsey Martins (Fr. New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS), and Emma Linden (So. Beverly, MA/Beverly HS) competed with distinction in the "A" Division in heavy weather both Saturday and Sunday. In the "B" division, racers Bailey Rice (So. Southampton, MA/Hampshire Regional HS), Julia Trudel (So. Lowell, MA/Lowell HS), and Emily Doiron (So. Arlington, MA/Arlington HS) took to the race course and provided highlights as well.
On Sunday, competition began in increasing winds, with multiple capsizes, gear failure from breakage, and pitch poling for many teams in what became an untenable event. UMass Dartmouth was spared any capsizes or damage, but retired just prior to the day's racing being suspended by officials, as boats and competitors made for shore.
"We remained competitive, but safe during this difficult regatta," a relieved UMD Head Coach Jerry Jennings said. "Kudos to the Mass Maritime Academy staff for assisting so many overturned boats, and helping crews to safety."
