Sailing Places 7th At Gardiner Island Invitational

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. -- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth sailing team battled inclement weather to place seventh among the nine-team field at the Gardiner Island Invitational this past weekend.  The Corsairs overcame steady rain on Saturday and strong wind gusts of 25 miles per hour on Sunday to leapfrog Salve Regina University in the team standings on the final day of competition.

Brown University captured the team title with 134 points, followed by Roger Williams University (172) and Brown University II (178).  UMass Dartmouth registered 445 points to outdistance themsevles from the Seahawks and Mitchell College.

In the A Division, sophomore Kelsey Delosh (Boston, Mass.) was the mainstay in the top boat during the competition, while classmates Courtney Grippin (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Emily Sharp (Orange, Mass.) split their responsibilities.  The Corsairs finished 12th or better in six of the 16 races, including a weekend-best seventh place result in the ninth race.

Sophomore Hanna Desilets (Little Compton, R.I.) skippered the B Division alongside Jennifer Moore.  The UMass Dartmouth second boat also placed 12th or better in six of the 16 races, including a seventh and 10th place performance.

Following a weekend off, the sailing team will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 18, when UMass Dartmouth competes in the Providence College Invitational.
