Sailing Sees Strong First Day at NEISA New England Fall Tournament

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. - The UMass Dartmouth women's sailing team competed in the first day of the New England Fall Tournament on Saturday, hosted by the University of New Hampshire at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Following today's action, the Corsairs currently sit 9th of 11 teams in a closely-matched fleet.

The day began with no wind and a postponement of the event while teams awaited the breeze.  When the southwest wind finally settled in around 11:30, th day saw extremely close racing amonst the field. Captain Kelsey Martins (New Bedford, Mass.) and crew Shannon McKeown (Franklin, Mass.) started the day with a fifth place finish in the A division and continued to sail in the middle of the fleet for the remainder of the day.

In the B division, captains Hannah Desilets (Little Compton, R.I.) and Courtney Grippin (Wilbraham, Mass.) had a strong performance in their second set, fighting their way into a 6th place finish for their top race of the day. Today marked the first time Desilets and Grippin have sailed together on their careers.

With a second day of racing ahead and predictions of considerably more wind tomorrow, the Corsairs have significant potential to move ahead in the rankings.
