MEDFORD, Mass. – UMass Dartmouth Sailing concluded the fall season with an 11th place finish on Thursday evening, competing at the Dark of Night Regatta at Mystic Lake, hosted by Tufts University.
How it Happened
The Corsairs sent two teams on the water, with captains Kelsey Delosh (Boston, Mass.) and Courtney Grippin (Wilbraham Mass.) in the A division for team one and Isabel Rombult (Boxford, Mass.) and Kathleen Tansey (Quincy, Mass.) sailing for team two. In the B division, captain Hanna Desilets (Little Compton, R.I.) and Melanie Muzyka (Pembroke, Mass.) made up team one with Phuong Pham (Haverhill, Mass.) and Shannon McKeown (Frankling, Mass.) in team two.
This event was a vast departure from the typical college regatta in that it was sailed in the dark. The competitors were faced with the combined challenge of light wind and low light but the Corsairs had a stellar performance and were able to use all they have learned to navigate through the middle of the fleet. With only 89 combined points, UMass Dartmouth's Team 1 sailed their way into 11th place in front UMass Amherst, Wentworth, Boston University, Wesleyan, UMass Dartmouth Team 2 (121 combined points), Emmanuel, UConn and Brandies respectively.
The Corsairs will break for the winter and resume the season in the spring, beginning in March.
