BOSTON – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth sailing team competed in its first regatta of the spring season on Sunday, sailing in pristine conditions at the Central Series 3 hosted by Harvard University on the Charles River.
How it Happened
The Corsairs finished with a combined score of 168 points, landing 15th in the 16-team fleet.
The race committee was able to run 6 races in both the A and B divisions. Shifty and inconsistent wind coupled with a very competitive fleet made for challenging racing. Starting in the A division for the Corsairs, junior Shannon McKeown (Franklin, Mass.) and senior Phoung Pham (Haverhill, Mass.) competed together for the first time. The duo was matched against the likes of Boston College, Northeastern, Salve Regina, Cornell, Tufts, URI, UMass Amherst, MIT, Wentworth, Harvard, Wesleyan, Johnson & Wales, Bates, and the University of New England.
After 4 races, seniors Kelsey Delosh (Boston, Mass.) and Courtney Grippin (Wilbraham, Mass.) took over in the A division to finish out the day with an 8th place finish in race 5. In the B division, the Corsairs were represented by sophomore Isabel Rombult (Boxford, Mass.) and junior Alix Blair (Gloucester, Mass.). While the B boat had a number of competitive races, their best finish came in race 4 with a 12th-place finish.
The Corsairs' spring season continues this coming weekend at the Admiral Alymers Cup hosted by Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Saturday and Sunday.
