Late Rally Carries RWU Over Baseball, 13-8
BRISTOL, RI-Host Roger Williams scored five runs in their final two at bats to break an 8-8 tie and defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team, 13-8 in a non-conference game at Paolino Field Thursday.
The Hawks got an RBI single from right fielder Trevor Larson to break the tie in a four-run seventh. Designated hitter Tim Georgen doubled home another run, a third scored on an infield out and a fourth scored on a wild pitch. Shortstop John Oppenheimer led off the eighth with a solo homer to make it 13-8.
The Corsairs scored four times in the second inning to take a 4-2 lead. Freshman second baseman Nate Farias (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) drove in a run with a single. sophomore designated hitter Bedward Ortiz (La Vega, DR/Worcester Doherty HS) doubled home two more, and senior shortstop John Granahan (Hanover, MA/Hanover HS/Southern Maine) singled home a fourth. Ortiz and Granahan had RBI singles in a two-run fourth that made it 6-2, Ortiz singled home another run in the fifth and freshman first baseman Alex Newton (Saco, ME/Thornton Academy/Franklin Pierce) drove in the eighth run in the sixth before the Hawks rallied. Dan Julian, the fourth RWU pitcher, earned the win and improved to 1-3. Freshman right-hander Alex Kineavy (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS), the third UMD pitcher, took the loss and fell to 0-1.
"We had a 7-2 lead and we gave up two big innings," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Prince. "We didn't execute. We had a chance to close them out and we didn't do it, and they came back."
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 14-19 with the defeat, while Roger Williams improved to 12-25 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Eastern Connecticut State Saturday.
