Baseball Defeated by Amherst, 7-3

WINTER HAVEN, FL-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team dropped a 7-3 decision to Amherst at the Russ Matt Tournament at Chain O'Lakes Field #1 Monday.

The Lord Jeffs scored twice each in the second, third and fourth innings, taking an early 6-1 lead.

Senior third baseman Tyler White (Westport, MA/Westport HS/Massasoit CC) doubled home a run in the second inning, and sophomore first baseman Alex Newton (Saco, ME/Thornton Academy/Franklin Pierce) doubled home two more in the sixth.

Freshman Matt Russell (Townsend, MA/North Middlesex HS) started and took the loss for UMass Dartmouth. Relievers Wayne Bolz (Jr. Billerica, MA/Billerica Memorial HS) and Brian Clark (Fr. Newfields, NH/Exeter HS) combined to hold Amherst to one run in relief.

"We gave up runs early, which put us behind the eight-ball," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Prince. "We started swinging the bats better later in the game. Wayne Bolz and Brian Clark came in and pitched very well for us. Amherst has a good team, and it's tough to come back against them. They got good pitching and made the plays in the field, and when you get down against a team like that, it's an uphill battle. We scrapped, but we couldn't get it done today."

UMass Dartmouth dropped to 1-4 with the defeat, while Amherst improved to 3-1 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they play Springfield Wednesday. Amherst will play Framingham State Tuesday.
