PLYMOUTH, NH - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth baseball team took both games of a Little East Conference doubleheader from host Plymouth State at Panther Park Saturday. The Corsairs rallied to win the opener, 6-4, and then took the nightcap, 9-3, in a game that was called after six innings because of darkness.
The Corsairs rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth inning to come from behind and win the opener. UMass Dartmouth loaded the bases with none out, and sophomore left fielder Luke Bomback (Swansea, MA/Case HS) singled home a run. Senior catcher Matt Worden (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) doubled home two more, and sophomore shortstop Nate Farias (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) capped the rally with a sacrifice fly.
PSU had taken a 3-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Worden singled home a run for UMD in the sixth, Plymouth replied in the sixth and the Corsairs scored again in the eighth, setting up their ninth-inning rally. Junior left-hander Wayne Bolz (Billerica, MA/Billerica Memorial HS) pitched a scoreless eighth inning and earned the win, improving to 2-0, while freshman right-hander Matt Russell (Townsend, MA/North Middlesex HS) pitched the ninth and earned his first save. Spencer Webb, the third Plymouth State pitcher, took the loss.
In the nightcap, UMD got a run in the top of the first when sophomore center fielder Ryan Medeiros (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford HS/Eckerd) scored on a wild pitch. In the third, Farias doubled home one run, freshman second baseman Taylor Cacciola (West Greenwich, RI/Exeter HS) doubled home another, and freshman right fielder Connor Shaw (Goffstown, NH/Goffstown HS) singled home a third. PSU got three in the third on an RBI single by shortstop Brandon Cox and a two-run single by catcher Dave Tammaro. UMass Dartmouth got three back in their half of the fourth on RBI singles by Medeiros and sophomore third baseman George Aggostini (Dighton, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS/Marist) and an error. Senior designated hitter Tyler White (Westport, MA/Westport HS/Massasoit CC) had a sacrifice fly in UMD's two-run fifth. Sophomore left-hander Nick Fuller (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) went all the way for the win, allowing four hits and striking out 10 to improve to 1-3, while starter Tucker Regan took the loss for PSU.
"We had a nice rally in the ninth inning of the first game, we got our first three runners on, we got a big hit from Matt Worden, and then we had Matt Russell come in and close the game for us," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Prince. "Wayne Bolz came in and settled everything down. (Junior starter) Karney (Boff, Dighton, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS) was coming off an injury and he was on a pitch count, and we got it together in the ninth."
Prince was pleased with Fuller's outing. "Nick threw the way we expected him to," said Prince. "He had number one stuff today, and he threw inspired baseball. It was good to come out of today's action with two wins. We've just got to keep moving forward."
The Corsairs are now 10-11 and 3-3 in the Little East Conference, while the Panthers are now 12-11 and 3-3 in LEC play. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Tufts in a doubleheader Monday. PSU will host Lyndon State Sunday.
