NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Sophomore first baseman Alex Newton (Saco, ME/Thornton Academy/Franklin Pierce) of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth baseball team has been honored by the Little East Conference.
Newton has been named Little East Conference Baseball Player of the Week.
Newton led the UMass Dartmouth offensive attack with a .435 batting average last week, going 10 for 23 with seven extra base hits, five runs scored, and 11 runs batted in. He had four doubles and three home runs and a 1.000 slugging percentage. Newton hit safely in five of the Corsairs' six games, getting multiple hits on three occasions. He hit a three-run homer in the nightcap of the doubleheader with Tufts last Monday. The next day, Newton went 2-for-4 with three runs scored, two home runs, and four RBIs at Rhode Island College. Newton then had two doubles and drove in four runs to against Western Connecticut State on Sunday.
"The award is well-deserved, Alex had a great week for us," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Prince. "He drove the ball well and played big in big games. This is all due to his hard work. He is an extremely hard worker. He dedicates himself during the season and the off season, and it's really paying off for him."
The Corsairs will begin a busy week against Babson Monday.
