PAWTUCKET, R.I. – University of Massachusetts Dartmouth junior Matt Cronin (Framingham, Mass.) was selected as the Little East Conference (LEC) Pitcher of the Week on Monday after helping the Corsairs to a 4-1 start to the 2018 campaign.
After missing last season to undergo Tommy John surgery, Cronin returned to action out of the bullpen in the season opener against Worcester State at the New England Baseball Complex. The junior from Framingham, Mass. fanned three over three innings to earn the win for the Corsairs as the offense erupted for 10 runs.
In his first career start at Henley Field in Lakeland, Fla., Cronin shut down Wartburg over five shutout innings, walking just one and striking out a career-high eight batters. He registered at least two strikeouts in four of his five innings, while limiting the Knights to a 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position. UMass Dartmouth picked up its third win in as many games to account for their best start since the 2012 season.
Cronin's two wins currently stand tied for first in the conference, while his 11 punch-outs place him tied for sixth in the league. In just six contests, UMass Dartmouth hurlers have amassed 69 strikeouts, averaging 11.5 punch-outs per game.
UMass Dartmouth is on the cusp of breaking into the 2018 D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25, as the Corsairs received six votes in the latest poll. The Blue and Gold are off to their best start since 2011, boasting an overall record of 5-1.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 4:45pm on March 14, when the Corsairs square off against Becker College at Lake Myrtle Field #4 in Auburndale, Fla.
