LEESBURG, FL-Junior third baseman John Granahan (Hanover, MA/Hanover HS/Southern Maine) drove in the go-ahead run with an eighth-inning single and junior right-hander Pat Lavey (Cranston, RI/Cranston East HS) pitched two shutout innings in relief as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team rallied to defeat Suffolk, 6-5, on the third day of their 2011 spring trip Monday at Lake Sumter Community College.
Granahan's single untied the game for the final time. UMass Dartmouth had built a 5-3 lead, with Granahan driving in a pair of runs with a sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded walk, and junior outfielder Dan Demello (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) driving home another with a sacrifice fly. The Rams tied the game in the bottom of the seventh when senior right-hander Kyle Merrill (Dennis, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth HS) yielded a two-run home. Merrill, who relieved starter Chris Contre (Sr. East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater HS) in the seventh, became the winning pitcher when Granahan's single put the Corsairs ahead. Lavey finished and earned the save.
"Chris Contre pitched well for us," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. "I'm happy with the win. We did leave some runners on base in the first five innings, but we didn't make any errors."
The Corsairs improved to 3-1 with the victory, while the Rams dropped to 2-2 with the defeat. UMD will continue their spring trip when they play a doubleheader against Westfield State Tuesday. Suffolk will play Ripon Tuesday.
