WINTER HAVEN, FL-Messiah scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh and final innning of the nightcap and came from behind to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team, 7-6, in the second game of their doubleheader at the Chain O'Lakes Complex Monday afternoon. The Falcons won the opener, 6-0.
The Corsairs went ahead early in the nightcap, building a 6-0 lead going to the bottom of the sixth behind freshman right-hander Aaron Brunette (North Andover, MA/North Andover HS), who pitched the first 5 2/3 innings. But Messiah rallied against relievers Pat Lavey (So. Cranston, RI/Cranston East HS) and Brian Pedrotti (Jr. Dalton, MA/Wahconah Regional HS), with Pedrotti taking the loss. Junior designated hitter Zak Talis (Lynnfield, MA/Lynnfield HS) had a two-run double for UMD, while freshman third baseman Matt Worden (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS), junior first baseman Anthony Fiorita (North Reading, MA/St. John's Prep) and senior center fielder Jeff Macchi (Franklin, MA/Franklin HS) each drove in a run, with Macchi getting three hits-a single, a double and a triple.
In the first game, the Corsairs were limited to three hits. Senior right-hander Niall Mitchell (Rehoboth, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS) pitched four scoreless innings in relief of starter Chris Contre (Jr. East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater HS), who started and took the loss.
"We were flat in the first game, but we came out and played well for most of the second game, we just didn't finish it off," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. "The game should have been ours. Aaron Brunette did a great job, but we didn't get it finished."
UMass Dartmouth is now 1-3, while Messiah is now 5-3. The Corsairs will return to action when they play MCLA in a doubleheader Wednesday. .
