WINTER HAVEN, FL-Two late rallies couldn't save the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team in their doubleheader against Fontbonne in the Russmatt Baseball Central Florida Invitational Tournament Monday.
The Corsairs dropped the opening game, 8-7, and the nightcap, 6-4.
A two-run double by sophomore third baseman Anthony Fiorita (Reading, MA/St. John's Prep) and a run-scoring single by junior center fielder Jeff Macchi (Franklin, MA/Franklin HS) staked UMass Dartmouth to a 3-0 first inning lead in the nightcap. But the Griffins scored six times in the bottom of the first inning against starting pitcher Scott Tibbetts (So. Hanover, MA/Hanover HS) to take a 6-3 lead. Junior Nial Mitchell (Rehoboth, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS) and sophomore Kyle Merrill (Dennis, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth HS) shut Fontbonne down the rest of the way. Senior first baseman Casey Askeland (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) drove in a run with a fifth-inning double, but the Corsairs could come no closer.
Sophomore catcher Matt Ryan (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge HS) had two doubles and drove in a run in the opener, and freshman second baseman Dan Demello (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) drove in two runs with a single, but UMD couldn't catch Fontbonne despite scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut their deficit to 8-7. Sophomore Shane Campbell (Marlboro, MA/Marlboro HS) started and took the loss for the Corsairs.
"We're coming close, but we're just not there yet," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran.
UMD dropped to 0-5 with the losses, while Fontbonne improved to 7-4 by winning both games. The Corsairs will play Salem State Tuesday.
