Baseball Outraces Hamilton in Florida, 22-8

AUBURNDALE, FL-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team scored 12 runs in their final three at-bats and exploded to defeat Hamilton, 22-8 on the penultimate day of their spring trip at the Lake Myrtle Complex Thursday afternoon.
The Corsairs, who trailed, 3-0 after an inning and a half, tied the game with two runs in the second inning and another in the third, then scored twice in each of their next two at-bats before adding five runs in the sixth, eight in the seventh and two more in the eighth. UMD finished with 19 hits. The Continentals scored their final two runs in the top of the ninth.
Junior designated hitter Zak Talis (Lynnfield, MA/Lynnfield HS) hit a grand slam homer for UMass Dartmouth during their eight-run seventh, senior center fielder Jeff Macchi (Franklin, MA/Franklin HS) also homered, senior left fielder Tom LaDore (Milford, CT/Foran HS) knocked in a pair of runs, and sophomore right fielder John Granahan (Hanover, MA/Hanover HS/Southern Maine) had a double and three runs batted in.
Freshman right-hander Mike St. Martin (Worcester, MA/Doherty HS) earned the victory, pitching the first 6 2/3 innings and allowing six runs. Senior right-hander Niall Mitchell (Rehoboth, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS) got the final out in the seventh, and freshmen Tom Morris (Newburyport, MA/Newburyport HS) and Tim Phillips (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge HS) finished up.
"We're playing better," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. "We fell behind early, but we came back and we hit the ball well. We got another good pitching performance from a freshman, Mike St. Martin pitched well."
UMass Dartmouth improved to 4-3 with the victory, their third in succession, while Hamilton dropped to 1-5 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they play D'Youville in a doubleheader on the final day of their spring trip Friday. .
