AUBURNDALE, FL-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning of the nightcap of their doubleheader against MCLA and went on to defeat the Trailblazers, 12-7, and earn a split of on the final day of is the Trailblazers. MCLA won the first game, 8-4.
Junior third baseman John Granahan (Hanover, MA/Hanover HS/Southern Maine) and sophomore left fielder Cory Albanese (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) keyed the Corsairs' decisive rally in the nightcap. Granahan drove in two runs with a triple, and Albanese doubled home two more. Freshman shortstop Bedward Ortiz (Worcester, MA/Doherty HS) drove in three runs with a second-inning triple. Senior right-hander Chris Contre (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater HS) pitched the first five innings to earn the victory, with sophomore Aaron Brunette (North Andover, MA/North Andover HS) and junior right-hander Pat Lavey (Cranston, RI/Cranston East HS) finishing up.
MCLA jumped ahead in the opener, 8-0, before a late UMass Dartmouth rally fell short. Senior catcher Zac Talis (Lynnfield, MA/Lynnfield HS) had two singles and a double and drove in two runs, while senior shortstop Ryan McDermott (Pembroke, MA/Pembroke HS) singled twice and had an RBI. Senior Shane Campbell (Marlboro, MA/Marlboro HS) started and took the loss.
"Fog delayed the morning game and we got a late start, and for some reason, we didn't have it at the beginning of the doubleheader," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. "They jumped on us, and we didn't have enough left in the tank to come back. In the second game, we played better and we hit the ball well."
The Corsairs finished their spring trip with a 6-4 record, while the Trailblazers are now 5-4. UMD will return home and begin their northern schedule when they visit Bridgewater State Wednesday.
