WINTER HAVEN, FL-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team exploded for 38 hits on the final day of their spring trip and swept a doubleheader from D'Youville, 19-2 and 27-2, at the Chain O'Lakes Complex Friday afternoon.
Junior designated hitter Zak Talis (Lynnfield, MA/Lynnfield HS) led the attack, driving in 11 runs in the doubleheader. He had two doubles in the first game. Senior left fielder Tom LaDore (Milford, CT/Foran HS) drove in three runs in each game, senior center fielder Jeff Macchi (Franklin, MA/Franklin HS) had two doubles and five runs batted in, sophomore third baseman John Granahan (Hanover, MA/Hanover HS/Southern Maine) drove in three runs in the nightcap, and junior first baseman Anthony Fiorita (North Reading, MA/St. John's Prep) had three hits. UMD led after five innings in the nightcap, 5-2, before scoring nine runs in the sixth and adding 13 more runs in the top of the seventh.
Senior right-hander Adam Gustafson (Dighton, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth HS) went five innings and earned the victory in the opener, with a pair of freshmen, left-hander Sal Serio (Lexington, MA/Lexington HS) and right-hander Greg Fredette (Millville, MA/Blackstone Valley Regional HS) finishing up by pitching an inning each. In the nightcap, freshman Brandon Borges (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) earned his first collegiate win by pitching five innings. Sophomore right-hander Pat Lavey (Cranston, RI/Cranston East HS) and junior right-hander Chris Contre (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater HS) each pitched an inning in relief.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 6-3 with the sweep, finishing their spring trip by winning their last five games. D'Youville, which was opening their season, dropped to 0-2. The Corsairs will return to action when they play Becker in their 2010 home opener Tuesday afternoon. .
