NEWPORT, RI- Host Salve Regina scored 12 runs in their final three at-bats and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team, 15-7, in a non-conference game at Cardines Field Wednesday.
Second baseman Jesse Outhouse broke a 3-3 tie with an RBI single in the sixth inning, and the Seahawks scored twice more after an error by UMD sophomore shortstop Ryan McDermott (Pembroke, MA/Pembroke HS). Shortstop Alexander Melcher and pinch-hitters Charles Matorozzo and Pat Quinn had RBI singles for SRU in the eighth.
Trailing, 3-0, the Corsairs tied the game in the fourth as junior left fielder Tom LaDore (Milford, CT/Foran HS) singled in two runs in a three-run inning. Junior center fielder Jeff Macchi (Franklin, MA/Franklin HS) singled in a run for UMD in the eighth, and junior third baseman Dave McGuire (Plainville, MA/King Philip Regional HS), McDermott and sophomore first baseman Chris Benevides (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) singled in runs in the ninth.
"It was 3-3 in the fifth and 6-3 in the sixth, then there were some plays we didn't make, and they took advantage," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. "It was a good baseball game, but we had a bad eight inning and they scored a bunch of runs. It was a disappointing ending to the game."
Nicholas Politelli, the second of three SRU pitchers, allowed an unearned run in three innings to earn the win, improving to 1-1. Sophomore Shane Campbell (Marlboro, MA/Marlboro HS) started and took the loss for the Corsairs, falling to 1-3.
UMD dropped to 4-13 with the defeat, while Salve Regina improved to 7-14 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Wentworth Thursday. The Seahawks will host Eastern Nazarene Saturday.
