WORCESTER, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team fell behind early and lost to host Worcester State, 23-8, in a non-conference game at Assumption's H.L. Rocheleau '24 Memorial Field Thursday afternoon.
Senior designated hitter Zac Talis (Lynnfield, MA/Lynnfield HS) doubled home two runs in the top of the first inning, but the Lancers came back with nine runs in the bottom of the first inning. Talis hit a two-run homer in the top of the fourth that cut the deficit to 11-6, and sophomore right fielder Matt Worden (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) singled home a run in the sixth. But WSU scored six runs in the sixth and another six in the seventh to put the game away.
First baseman Nick Fluegge had three doubles, four hits and eight runs batted in for the Lancers. Second baseman Nick Gezotis had three RBIs, and shortstop Corey McDonald had four hits and two RBIs. Talis and Worden each had three hits for the Corsairs, Talis had four RBIs and Worden added two.
"Zac Talis really hit the ball well today, but we didn't pitch well or play well," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. "We fell behind early and we had to battle back the whole day."
Kyle St. Thomas went the first five innings for Worcester State and earned the victory, improving to 1-2. Sophomore Mike St. Martin (Worcester, MA/Doherty HS), the first of four UMass Dartmouth pitchers, took the loss and fell to 0-1.
The Corsairs dropped to 7-9 with the loss, while the Lancers improved to 11-7 with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Keene State Saturday. WSU will host Salem State Saturday.
