Baseball, WCSU Split LEC Twinbill
April 22, 2011
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Senior designated hitter Matt Ryan (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge HS) doubled home the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team went on to defeat visiting Western Connecticut State, 9-6, to earn a split of their Little East Conference doubleheader at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Friday afternoon. The Colonials won the opener, 7-2.
The Corsairs trailed, 6-4, when senior catcher Zac Talis (Lynnfield, MA/Lynnfield HS) drove in a run with an infield grounder to cut the deficit to 6-5. UMass Dartmouth increased their lead in the eighth on an error and Talis' RBI single, and junior reliever Pat Lavey (Cranston, RI/Cranston East HS), who relieved starter Shane Campbell (Sr. Marlboro, MA/Marlboro HS) in the eighth inning, pitched two scoreless innings to earn his fifth save of the season.
Junior first baseman Anthony Fiorita's two-run single in the first inning staked the Corsairs to a 2-1 lead, but sophomore third baseman Bill Eannotti (Shelton, CT/Notre Dame-Fairfield HS) slammed a three-run homer in the top of the fourth to put WCSU ahead. Sophomore right fielder Matt Worden (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) homered in the bottom of the fourth for UMD, but junior center fielder Mike Yates (Guilford, CT/Guilford HS) and junior designated hitter David Simone (Danbury, CT/Immaculate HS) singled home runs in the top of the fifth to make it 6-3, WCSU. Worden's RBI grounder in the last of the fifth made it 6-4 and set the stage for UMD's late rally. Campbell earned the win and improved to 3-2, while senior Mike Baccaro (Berlin, CT/Berlin HS) started and took the loss for the Colonials and dropped to 1-2.
UMD took the lead in the opener on an error, but junior left fielder Anthony Ruffo (Norwich, CT/St. Bernard HS) tied it with a sacrifice fly in the fourth. The Corsairs went ahead in the bottom of the fifth on a wild pitch by WCSU senior starter Billy Armstrong (Moodus, CT/Hale-Ray HS), but RBI singles by sophomore shortstop Chris Alberto (Trumbull, CT/Notre Dame Fairfield HS), Yates and junior second baseman Zack Dandrea (Wanaque, NJ/DePaul Catholic HS) put the Colonials ahead to stay. Eannotti tripled in two runs in a three-run eighth for WCSU. Armstrong went all the way for the win, limiting UMD to five hits and improving his record to 4-1. Corsair senior starter Brian Pedrotti (Dalton, MA/Wahconah Regional HS) took the loss and fell to 2-5.
"We got some big hits in the second game, and we got the right guys up at the right time," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. "Matt Ryan and Zac Talis got some big hits, and Matt Worden hit a home run to get us going. Once we got ahead, we brought in Pat Lavey and he got us the last six outs. We didn't play well in the first game. We didn't swing the bats, and we didn't play well behind Pedrotti."
The Corsairs are now 11-17 and 5-4 in the Little East Conference, while the Colonials are 14-14 and 3-6 in LEC play. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Rhode Island College Monday. Western Connecticut will host Mount Saint Mary Monday.
