NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team seized an early 4-0 lead and went on to defeat visiting Rhode Island College, 10-5, in a Little East Conference game at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Monday afternoon.

The Corsairs scored four times in the second inning, getting RBI singles from senior shortstop Ryan McDermott (Pembroke, MA/Pembroke HS) and junior third baseman John Granahan (Hanover, MA/Hanover HS/Southern Maine), a run-scoring double from junior first baseman Anthony Fiorita (North Reading, MA/St. John's Prep), and an RBI grounder from freshman second baseman Bedward Ortiz (Worcester, MA/Doherty HS).

Junior first baseman Dan Hopkins (Cranston, RI/Cranston West HS) drove in a run in the sixth fir RIC with a sacrifice fly, but UMass Dartmouth came back with three runs in their half of the inning, getting RBI singles from McDermott, Ortiz and Granahan.

The Anchormen scored twice in the seventh and twice more in the eighth on a two-run homer by senior designated hitter Gary Levesque (East Providence, RI/East Providence HS), but sophomore third baseman Matt Worden (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) doubled home two runs in the bottom of the eighth to increase the Corsairs' lead to five runs.

Senior right-hander Chris Contre (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater HS) allowed two earned runs in 6 2/3 innings to earn the win, improving to 3-2. Sophomore lefthander Mike St. Martin (Worcester, MA/Doherty HS) and junior right Pat Lavey (Cranston, RI/Cranston East HS) finished up. Sophomore David Hoey (Lincoln, RI/Lincoln HS), who went the first six innings and allowed seven runs, took the loss and fell to 1-5.

"We hit the ball well, we had a couple of big innings, and it was nice to see," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. "Chris Contre did a nice job on the mound, he got us to where we needed to be, and Matt Worden had a big hit for us late in the game when we put it away."

The Corsairs improved to 12-17 and 6-4 in the Little East Conference, while the Anchormen fell to 12-16 and 3-7 in LEC play. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Wheaton Tuesday. RIC will visit Salve Regina Tuesday.
