NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Visiting Suffolk scored in every inning and defeated the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team, 20-11, in a non-conference game at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Monday.
The Rams had 22 hits, including four home runs, in a game that saw the teams combine for 37 hits and six homers.
Starting and winning pitcher Andy Babb (Sr. Ashland, MA/Ashland HS), who also served as Suffolk's designated hitter, started the scoring off with the first of his two homers, a two-run shot in the top of the first inning.
Sophomore right fielder Matt Worden (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) hit a solo homer for the Corsairs in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman shortstop Devan Jones (Roslindale, MA/Catholic Memorial HS) hit a three-run homer for the Rams in the top of the fourth, and freshman center fielder Wayne Bolz (Billerica, MA/Billerica HS) singled in two runs and senior shortstop Ryan McDermott (Pembroke, MA/Pembroke HS) doubled home another in the last of the fourth for UMD.
Freshman third baseman Jake Cintolo's bases-loaded triple keyed a four-run fifth for the Rams. UMass Dartmouth replied in kind in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on Worden's RBI double, junior left fielder Dan Demello's two-run single, and a run-scoring triple by Bolz.
Babb's solo homer and a grand slam by senior center fielder Nick Travelyn (Bedford, NH/Manchester West HS) accounted for Suffolk's scoring in the top of the sixth. Senior designated hitter Zac Talis (Lynnfield, MA/Lynnfield HS) homered in the bottom of the sixth for UMD. Bolz finished with two hits and three RBIs for UMass Dartmouth, and Worden and Talis each had three hits, Worden driving in two runs and Talis one. Babb had four hits and he and Travelyn each drove home four runs for Suffolk, while Cintolo, Jones and freshman first baseman Mike Muse (Milton, MA/Milton HS) each drove in three.
Babb went the first five innings for Suffolk and earned the win, improving to 4-4. Corsair freshman starter Ethan Dubois (Monson, MA/Monson HS) took the loss and dropped to 1-1, while senior Charles Kilgore (Milford, NH/Milford HS), who pitched the final four innings, earned his second save of the season.
The Corsairs dropped to 15-21 with the defeat, while the Rams improved to 21-19 with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they play Keene State Wednesday evening at Eastern Connecticut in the first round of the Little East Conference tournament. Suffolk will visit Wentworth Wednesday in the first round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament.
