BROCKTON, MA-Curry used a pair of three-run innings to take the lead and held off the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team, 6-4, in a non-conference game at Campanelli Stadium Wednesday afternoon.
The Corsairs scored a run on an error in the top of the first inning, then rallied, getting a run in the sixth on a solo homer by junior first baseman Casey Askeland (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS). UMass Dartmouth scored twice in the ninth on an infield grounder by freshman pinch-hitter Pete Grillo (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury HS) and a pinch-hit single by freshman catcher Eric Rodriguez (Burlington, MA/Burlington HS). But reliever Matt Wile induced senior right fielder Kevin Narey (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical HS) to bounce into a game-ending double play to preserve the lead.
Center fielder Jesse Bruinsma led off the first inning with a home run and singled in a run in the fourth inning for the Colonels. Third baseman Brad Hawn and designated hitter C.J. Haddad had run-scoring hits in the first, and second baseman Ben Blaisdell doubled home a run in the fourth. Brian Pipines scattered five hits through the first eight innings for Curry and earned the victory, improving his record to 5-0. Freshman right-hander Tyler Noyes (Keene, NH/Keene HS) started for the Corsairs and took the loss, falling to 0-1.
"We had a couple of bad innings, but the wind was blowing out and we threw two freshman pitchers and didn't walk anyone," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. "Tyler Noyes pitched well in his first start for us. We had our chances, but we just couldn't come all the way back." The Corsairs dropped to 3-27 with the loss, while the Colonels improved to 25-7-1 with the win. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Bridgewater State in a non-conference game Thursday.
