Baseball Heads North for First Round of LEC Playoffs

May 1, 2009

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team will begin 2009 Little East Conference playoff action when they travel to Keene State for the best-of-three first round playoff series this weekend. All of the games will be played at the Owl Sports Complex. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at 12 noon. If they split, they will play a third and deciding game Monday at 1:00 p.m.

UMass Dartmouth enters the tournament as the sixth seed, with a 12-24 overall record and a 6-8 LEC mark. The Corsairs and Rhode Island College tied for fifth in the final standings, with the Anchormen getting the nod on the tie-breaker based on head-to-head competition. Keene State was 21-14, 8-6 in LEC play, and earned the third via a tie-breaker with UMass Boston after tying the Beacons for third place in the final conference standings.

The Corsairs won both games of their LEC doubleheader against KSC, 7-3 and 5-4, on the opening day of conference play at the UMD Athletic Complex March 28th. Both teams enter this weekend's series having won five of their last six games. UMass Dartmouth is coming off a 12-9 win at 15th-ranked Wheaton Thursday after winning three of five conference games last weekend and defeating Johnson & Wales Wednesday. The Owls defeated St. Joseph's (ME) Tuesday after sweeping three LEC games last weekend.

"We have an excellent opportunity to extend our season," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Curran. "We're playing with a lot of confidence. The keys are going to be getting solid pitching and playing solid defense, and to continue with our timely hitting."

The winner of this weekend's series will advance to the LEC's four-team, double-elimination tournament next weekend at the site of the highest seeded team.
