Corsairs Suffer First Loss to Brandeis, 66-65

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's basketball team fell to visiting Brandeis, 66-65, in non-conference action Wednesday evening despite a second-half surge. The loss is the first for the Corsairs on the season (2-1), while the Judges improve to 2-0 with the victory. 

The Corsairs were once again lead by senior Jordan Rezendes (Onset, Mass.) with a game-high 26 points. Rezendes added six rebounds and three assists and shot 10-of-12 from the charity stripe. 

The Judges started out strong, shooting 41 percent (12-29) from the field in the first half and 38 percent (3-8) from beyond the arc, but were held to 36 percent from the field and were shut out from the three-point mark and beyond. Sophomore Jordan Cooper (Weston, Fla.) was the mainstay of the Brandeis offense, scoring 20 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Junior John Powell (Ashland, Mass.) put in a complete effort, scoring 14 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and three blocks.

UMass Dartmouth made a late surge, but they could not hold a late lead with 1:20 remaining in the second half.  The Judges would tie up the game for the seventh time with 1:03 remaining before taking the lead with two free throws by Powell.

Junior Jon Robinson (Chatham, Mass.) and freshman Atakan Akcam (Hoosac Falls, N.Y.) rounded out the Corsairs in double digits, as Robinson completed the evening with 10 points, two assists and two rebounds. Akcam posted the highest scoring night of his young career, dropping 11 points while adding a team-high seven rebounds.

The Corsairs will be back in action when they host Plymouth State on Saturday, Nov. 21st at 3 p.m. to open up Little East Conference play.
