PAWTUCKET, R.I. – University of Massachusetts Dartmouth freshman Jake Ashworth (Fairhaven, Mass.) collected his second Little East Conference Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week honor on Monday, earning the accolade after three victories last week.
Ashworth averaged 16 points on 58 percent shooting from the floor on the week. After scoring 10 points in the Corsairs’ comeback win over Brandeis on Tuesday, he netted a career-high 25 points to lead UMass Dartmouth to a 95-74 win against Bridgewater State. On that game, Ashworth shot 9-of-14 from the floor (64 percent) including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, adding six rebounds. The freshman guard closed off the week as the Corsairs opened LEC play at Plymouth State on Saturday, scoring 13 points with three 3-pointers.
UMass Dartmouth has now won five-straight since falling to Salem State, starting the year 5-1 for the first time since 2009-10 season. Ashworth has played a key role since day one, ranking second on the Corsair roster with 15.5 points per game. The Corsairs look to extend their win streak on Thursday, hosting Roger Williams at the Tripp Athletic Center for a 7 p.m. start.
