Position: Assistant Coach

Ed Rodrigues has been a basketball coach for virtually all of his adult life. But he's now into collegiate coaching after a long, successful run in the high school ranks.

Rodrigues spent 31 years as a coach in the New Bedford school system. The head freshman coach for four seasons, Rodrigues then became the head varsity boys' coach. In 27 seasons, his teams won 18 conference championships, 22 holiday titles, two South Sectional championships, two Eastern Massachusetts titles, and back-to-back state championships in the 1992-93 and 1993-94 seasons. His teams qualified for the state tournament 24 times, and his overall record of 437-154 was one of the best in Massachusetts. He was named Coach of the Year by the Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Association in 1993 and 1994 and by the Boston Globe in 1993. A member of the New Bedford High School Athletic Hall of Fame both as a player and as a coach, Rodrigues was formally inducted into the Massachusetts High School Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in November, 2010.

"I became the freshman coach at New Bedford High School right out of college, and it was kind of by accident," said Rodrigues. "They needed a freshman coach, I tried it and I really enjoyed it."

A graduate of Assumption, Rodrigues helped lead the Greyhounds to the New England championship three times and the NCAA Division II Final Four on three occasions. He was named first team All-New England in 1976.

Also a U.S. History teacher at New Bedford HS, Rodrigues retired from coaching when his son, Ryan, began his collegiate basketball career at St. Michael's. "I retired from coaching so I wouldn't miss Ryan's games," said Rodrigues. "I missed coaching, and I had a chance to coach in college, which is something I always wanted to do. I've never been an assistant before, but Brian and I have been friends for a long time, and Brian has been really good to work with. This was a perfect opportunity to continue to do what I like to do.
