NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Mount Saint Vincent defeated the University of Maine-Farmington, 77-64, in the consolation game of the 2011 Hampton Inn Classic at the Tripp Athletic Center at UMass Dartmouth Saturday.
The Dolphins opened the game with an 8-5 run, but the teams would tie the score four times in the opening 12 minutes of play. With 3:45 to play in the first half, Pet Sumner knocked down a pair of free throws, giving the Beavers their final lead of the game. A layup from Mark Waite tied the game at 22-22, and then a three-pointer from Jon Moore gave the Dolphins a lead they would never relinquish. Mount Saint Vincent took a 33-27 lead into halftime.
Mount Saint Vincent opened the second half on a 22-9 run, and another three-pointer from Moore gave the Dolphins their largest lead of the game, 55-37, with 13:34 to play. A three-pointer from Sumner pulled the Beavers to within nine points, 57-48, but the Dolphins answered with a 10-2 run and maintained a double-digit lead the remainder of the game, en route to a 77-64 victory.
Moore led the way for the Dolphins, netting a game-high 21 points, shooting 7-of-13 from the floor, including 6-of-12 from three-point range. Mark Waite added 14 points and nine rebounds while Shaquille Cunningham chipped in 13 points. Pet Sumner was the leading scorer for the Beavers with a team-high 13 points with two rebounds and a steal. Andrew Dickey and Yusaf Iman each scored 10 points in the loss.
MSV shot 43.3% (29-of-67) from the floor, while UMF made 42.6% (26-of-61) from the field. The Beavers out rebounded the Dolphins 41-34 during the contest.
The Dolphins improved to 1-1 with the victory, while the Beavers fell to 0-3 with the defeat. Mount Saint Vincent will return to action when they host Baruch Tuesday, November 29th. Maine-Farmington will host Castleton State Friday, December 2nd.
