Men's Basketball Defeats Plymouth State, 87-64

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's basketball team used a 22-4 run to open a 35-15 lead, bolted to a 48-27 halftime advantage and went on to defeat visiting Plymouth State, 87-64, in a Little East Conference game at the Tripp Athletic Center Saturday.

Leading, 13-11, with 12:33 left in the first half, the Corsairs got a pair of jumpers from freshman center Alex Rodrigues (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS), a three-point play from sophomore guard John Genkos (Worcester, MA/Doherty HS), and a layup from freshman guard Jake Laga (Northampton, MA/Northampton HS) to take a 22-11 lead with 9:29 left in the first half.

PSU senior forward Jesse Sabolis (Stoughton, MA/Stoughton/New Hampton School) interrupted the run with a layup, but senior center Lance Greene (Dorchester, MA/Charlestown HS/UMass Lowell) hit a layup and two free throws and sophomore forward Eleazar Clayton (Boston, MA/East Boston HS/Monroe CC) added a layup and a pair of jump shots. PSU senior guard Kyle Walker (Brooklyn, NY/Brooklyn College Academy) converted a layup, but UMD senior forward Colin Burns (Chepachet, RI/Ponaganset HS/CCRI capped the run with a three-pointer.

The Corsairs made 19 of 31 shots from the field for 61.3 per cent, while holding PSU to eight of 25 for 32 per cent.

"I was very happy with our team's effort, both offensively and defensively," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Brian Baptiste. "I'm pleased with the way we ran the fast break, we did a better job with less dribbling and more passes up the floor. We rebounded well , we challenged shots, and we had a good effort from a lot of different people."

Greene led the way with a double double, scoring 25 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, making eight of 11 shots from the field and blocking six shots. The point total was one under his career high of 26 at Eastern Connecticut two years ago. Clayton added a career high 20 points, senior guard Alex Klepadlo, Bernardston, MA/Pioneer Valley Regional HS) contributed 11, and Genkos added 10. Senior guard Brian Chergey (Bow, NH/Bow HS) led the Panthers with 15 points, junior Matt Cloutier (Milton, NH/Nute HS) added 14, and junior guard Stephan Roberts (Kissimmee, FL/New Dimensions HS) had 11.

The Corsairs improved to 6-3 and 1-1 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while the Panthers dropped to 4-5 and 0-2 in LEC play with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Johnson & Wales Tuesday evening. Plymouth State will visit Bowdoin January 3rd.
