WESTFIELD, Mass. – University of Massachusetts Dartmouth freshman quarterback Stephen Gacioch (Tiverton, R.I.) earned his first career Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletics Conference (MASCAC) honor on Sunday, taking Rookie of the Week accolades.
Gacioch guided the Corsairs to their first win of the season Saturday evening in the MASCAC opener as the hosts dismantled Westfield State 51-26 at Cressy Field. On the contest, Gacioch threw for 264 yards on 14-for-21 passing with four touchdowns in just his second career start. The freshman connected with junior receiver Abbi Bamgbose (Worcester, Mass.) for 19- and 11-yard touchdown completions in the first quarter, and later found junior Jeremy Jackson (Middletown, R.I.) and freshman Leroy Brown (Milford, Mass.) in the endzone in the third quarter. Gacioch additionally completed a game-high 54-yard pass to Bamgbose and scrambled for an additional 13 yards.
The Corsairs’ 51-point total marked the highest for a UMass Dartmouth team since Nov. 1, 2008 in a 53-35 victory over Endicott. In all, UMass Dartmouth totaled 448 yards offense while holding Westfield State to 373 yards and just 70 yards in the air.
UMass Dartmouth makes its first road trip next Saturday, trekking to Plymouth State for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
