WESTFIELD, Mass. – University of Massachusetts Dartmouth freshman Jacob Burkhead (Plymouth, Mass.) was tabbed the MASCAC Rookie of the Week on Sunday, giving the Corsairs the conference accolade for the third-straight week.
Burkhead put together his best performance yet, amassing a team-high 10 tackles in the Corsairs’ 30-27 non-conference loss to Curry College on Saturday. Eight his tackles were solo stops, with two tackle assists. The defensive back additionally recorded his first career fumble recovery, halting a Curry drive in the second quarter to help UMass Dartmouth head into the halftime intermission with the score knotted at 17.
The Corsairs ultimately slipped in the back-and-forth contest with the Colonels on a final touchdown by the hosts with six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. UMass Dartmouth accumulated 356 total yards offense including 265 passing yards and 91 rushing yards, with the defense forcing two interceptions and three sacks.
UMass Dartmouth, now 2-3 overall with a 2-1 slate in MASCAC play, return to Cressy Field and league competition on Friday evening, hosting Bridgewater State for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
