Kickoff for the 2018 UMass Dartmouth football season is just 11 days away, and as preparations continue for the September 1st opener at Alfred State, Head Coach Mark Robichaud has named seniors Antonio Mitjans and Antonio Slaughter to serve as Corsair co-captains this fall.
Mitjans, a native of Ashland, Mass. and a graduate of Ashland High School, is back for his second campaign as a team captain, as the three-year starter anchors an offensive line unit that helped UMass Dartmouth amass nearly 4,000 yards of total offense in 2017. Slaughter, a native of Springfield, Mass. and a graduate of Chicopee High School, shined once again in the defensive backfield for Robichaud, as he collected 57 total tackles (46 solo) while recording a pair of interceptions and a team-best nine break-ups last season.
“Both Antonios have established themselves as respected team leaders both on and off the field, and their performance certainly speaks volumes about their character,” Robichaud, who enters his 12th campaign at UMass Dartmouth, says of his captains. “The high expectations they set for themselves are the same they have for their teammates, and I know they will continue to set a positive and productive example this season.”
After the lid-lifter at Alfred State, the Corsairs open their home slate on Saturday, September 8th by welcoming 17th-ranked Delaware Valley to Cressy Field.
