Dartmouth, Mass. -- UMass Dartmouth sophomore defensive back Jacob Burkhead was named earlier today to the 2018 Google Cloud Division III Football Academic All-District team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), as he is now eligible for selection to the Division III National Academic All-America team that will be announced early next month.
A native of Plymouth, Mass. and a graduate of Plymouth North High School, Burkhead sports a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point average as a Political Science major at the University, and earlier today he also earned a spot on the 2018 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference first team all-conference squad. Jacob paced the Corsairs with 65 total tackles (49 solo) while leading the team in both interceptions (four) and pass break-ups (seven) on the year, as the 2017 MASCAC Defensive Rookie of the Year was tabbed as the league’s Geico Defensive Player of the Week back on October 22nd after notching a pair of picks, two pass break-ups and three tackles in a 41-27 triumph over Worcester State.
In 20 career contests in a UMass Dartmouth uniform, Burkhead has amassed 130 total stops (93 solo) and nine total pass break-ups to go with his four interceptions. Jacob becomes the second Corsair student-athlete to earn Google Cloud Academic All-District honors in the past week, as women’s soccer senior standout Kayla Loycano (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) also received the accolade last Thursday.
The Corsairs posted a 5-5 overall mark under Head Coach Mark Robichaud this fall, including a 4-4 slate in MASCAC action.
