Dartmouth, Mass. -- UMass Dartmouth placed seven student-athletes on the 2018 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Football all-conference team that was released earlier today, as three Corsairs collected first-team all-league accolades for their performances this fall.
Leading the way is senior center Antonio Mitjans (Ashland, Mass./Ashland), who was named as the 2018 MASCAC Offensive Lineman of the Year after anchoring a unit that amassed over 4,100 yards of total offense this season. Mitjans, a three-time first team all-MASCAC honoree, was joined on the first-team all-conference squad by sophomore defensive back Jacob Burkhead (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) and junior Tony Slaughter (Springfield, Mass./Chicopee), who earned first team honors as a return specialist and second team accolades as a linebacker. Burkhead, last year’s league Defensive Rookie of the Year, paced UMass Dartmouth defensively with 65 total tackles (49 solo) to go with four interceptions and seven pass break-ups on the year, while Slaughter (a second team all-conference pick last fall) averaged 8.5 yards per punt return and amassed 54 total tackles to go with two interceptions and a fumble recovery return for a touchdown.
Sophomores Stephen Gacioch (Tiverton, R.I./Tiverton), Leroy Brown (Milton, Mass./Milton) and James Tooker (Harwich, Mass./Nauset), along with freshman offensive tackle Gage DaSilva (Providence, R.I./Classical), comprised the Corsair quartet of second-team all-MASCAC honorees. Gacioch, the 2017 MASCAC Offensive Rookie of the Year, tied the school single-season passing yards mark of 2,298 first set in 1998 by Jay Furtado from the quarterback spot this season, as he collected 2,633 yards of total offense and accounted for 23 total touchdowns (19 passing, four rushing). Brown was Gacioch’s top target on the year, as he hauled in 45 receptions for 818 yards and seven scores that included a 199-yard receiving effort against Bridgewater State on October 13th, while Tooker converted 35-of-39 extra point attempts as the Corsair placekicker. DaSilva joined Mitjans in comprising a top offensive line corps during his inaugural collegiate campaign, as UMass Dartmouth averaged nearly 250 passing yards and over 160 rushing yards per contest in 2018.
Head Coach Mark Robichaud’s squad posted a 5-5 overall mark on the season, including a 4-4 slate in MASCAC action.
