UMass Dartmouth junior linebacker Tony Slaughter and sophomore kicker James Tooker were named as the respective Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Geico Football Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week on Sunday afternoon for their efforts in the Corsairs’ 28-9 victory at Westfield State last Friday evening.
Slaughter, a native of Springfield, Mass. and a graduate of Chicopee High School, recorded six total tackles and a pair of pass break-ups while returning a fumble 30 yards for UMass Dartmouth’s second defensive touchdown of the game. Tony ranks second on the team with 18 total tackles (15 solo) to date, as the Corsair defensive unit recorded a pair of strip sack fumble returns for scores to highlight a 28-point third quarter outburst in Friday’s comeback win over the Owls.
Tooker, a native of Harwich, Mass. and a graduate of Nauset Regional High School, converted all four of his extra point attempts on the night, as he is perfect on 14 attempts in the early going.
Head Coach Mark Robichaud’s squad, which stands at 2-1 overall after claiming its MASCAC opener, returns home on Saturday afternoon when UMass Dartmouth welcomes defending league champion Plymouth State to Cressy Field for a conference clash that kicks off at 5:30 pm EDT.
