A trio of UMass Dartmouth football standouts were recognized by the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference on Sunday afternoon for their respective performances in last night’s 21-16 victory over defending league champion Plymouth State at Cressy Field.
Sophomore quarterback Stephen Gacioch (Tiverton, R.I./Tiverton) was named as the MASCAC Geico Offensive Player of the Week after amassing 298 yards of total offense and tossing a pair of touchdown passes for the Corsairs, as he completed 20-of-30 pass attempts for 236 yards and connected for scoring strikes of 13 and 28 yards. Gacioch added 62 rushing yards on 13 carries and converted three first downs with rushes on what proved to be the deciding touchdown late in the contest.
Junior placekicker Jack Droney (Suffield, Conn./East Catholic) earned MASCAC Geico Special Teams Player of the Week accolades after averaging 36.7 yards on six punts that included a pair inside the 20-yard line. Droney also averaged 56.3 yards on four kickoffs and became the second straight UMass Dartmouth recipient of the award, which last week went to sophomore teammate James Tooker (Harwich, Mass./Nauset).
Freshman running back Steffan Gravely (Lynn, Mass./Lynn Tech) was tabbed as the MASCAC Geico Rookie of the Week for the second time this season, as he amassed 27 all-purpose yards and scored from two yards out with 1:14 remaining for the game-winning touchdown.
Head Coach Mark Robichaud’s squad, which is off to its best start in three years at 3-1 and 2-0 in MASCAC play, hits the road for its next outing on Saturday, September 29th when UMass Dartmouth travels to Danbury, Conn. to square off with Western Connecticut in a conference clash that kicks off at 5:00 pm EDT.
