The defense at UMass Dartmouth is once again in capable hands with Steve Faniel as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.
Faniel is entering his fifth season with the Corsairs. Prior to joining the staff at UMass Dartmouth, he served as the defensive line coach at Westfield State for three seasons.
A native of Wareham, where he earned All-South Coast Conference honors as a center and defensive lineman, Faniel was a four-year starter at Westfield State. He earned All-Conference honors in each of his last two seasons, and the Owls won three Bogan Division championships during his tenure, winning the league championship in 2001 and falling to an undefeated UMass Dartmouth team in the conference title game the following season. Westfield State was top-ranked in the nation in total defense in 2001 and 2002.
After earning his bachelor's degree in Liberal Studies at WSC, Faniel joined the coaching ranks, moving to Westfield to coach each fall and returning to Wareham following the season to teach.
"This is a great opportunity," said Faniel. "To be able to stay here, teach and coach football is a dream come true." Faniel is an Alternative Education teacher at Wareham High School.
