NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Junior linebacker Brock Lawrence (Benton, ME/Lawrence HS) intercepted a pass by UMass Dartmouth junior quarterback Patrick Orlando (Manchester, MA/Essex HS/Saint Anselm) late in the fourth quarter and Maine Maritime ran out the clock as the Mariners held on for a 21-13 victory over the Corsairs in the annual Shrine Bowl at Cressy Field Saturday.

UMass Dartmouth, which had driven to the MMA 21 yard line before junior Edgar Osols' 38-yard field goal attempt sailed wide with 14:49 left in the fourth quarter, had taken over when junior defensive back Darrien Furr (East Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) and sophomore linebacker Joe Teixera (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS) stopped Mariner senior quarterback Matthew Rende (Augusta, ME/Cony HS) on fourth down at the UMD 35 with 3:23 remaining.

Orlando picked up a first down on an 11-yard scramble. On the next series, he was sacked by freshman defensive lineman Andrew Hammond (East Waterboro, ME/Massabesic HS) and threw an incompletion before Lawrence made his interception on third down.

The Corsairs built a 13-7 lead late in the first half, scoring twice within 4:14 late in the second quarter. Orlando capped a 74 yard, 15 play drive with a two-yard scoring pass to junior wide receiver Joe Luiz (New Bedford, MA/Bishop Stang HS) with 5:59 left in the first half, cutting MMA's lead to 7-6. Sophomore running back Bill Wetherbee (Veazie, ME/John the Baptist HS) blocked Osols' conversion attempt.

One the first play after Osols kicked off, the Mariners fumbled the exchange from center and junior defensive lineman Nick Manganello (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) jumped on the loose ball for UMD.

Orlando completed a pair of passes to junior wide receiver Brendan McNeish (Springfield, MA/Bridgton Academy) on the ensuing drive before diving into the end zone with 1:45 remaining in the second quarter. Osols' kick made it 13-7.

Maine Maritime came right back. Senior running back Nick Bourassa (Jay, ME/Jay HS) returned the kickoff 39 yards to the Mariner 44, then took a pitch from Rende and raced 46 yards down the sideline to score with 39 seconds left in the first half. Senior Mike Brennan's (Manchester, ME/Maranacook HS) conversion made it 14-13 at halftime.

The Mariners jumped on top quickly, driving 53 yards on four plays on their first series to score on Rende's seven-yard run. They drove 97 yards in 12 plays to score in the third quarter, Bourassa running the ball in from six yards out to make it 21-13 with 4:53 remaining.

"Every loss is tough," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Mark Robichaud. "They beat us 42-0 last year, but this was a much different ballgame. We gave up a few big plays on defense, and had some wide open opportunities on offense and didn't execute. I'm proud of our team, we played hard and never gave up. Our defense played well, but Maine Maritime has the type of offense that wears you down. We came out a little too ready and excited, but we settled down after their first score. Our young players did a great job on the offensive and defensive lines."

Corsairs' freshman running back Mike Janey (Dorchester, MA/Wellesley HS) rushed 20 times for 81 yards, while Orlando was 12 of 32 passing for 91 yards and picked up an additional 64 yards on the ground on 12 carries. McNeish caught six passes for 49 yards, Luiz four for 37.

Sophomore fullback Ian Champeon (Dover-Foxcroft, ME/Foxcroft Academy) rushed 18 times for 199 yards for Maine Maritime, Bourassa gained 100 yards in nine carries, caught a pass for 20 yards and returned three kickoffs for 100 yards, Rende rushed 27 times for 79 yards, and Wetherbee gained 74 yards in five carries.

Defensively, UMD senior linebacker John Cordasco (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls HS) made 15 tackles, including five solo stops, had a tackle for three yards of lost yardage, and recovered a fumble. Senior defensive back Ross O'Toole (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) had 14 tackles, including four solos, and an interception, while Teixera had 12 stops, including three solos, and a tackle for three yards of lost yardage. For the Mariners, junior linebacker Joel Chadbourne (Westbrook, ME/Westbrook HS) had 11 tackles, including three solos, and broke up a pass, while sophomore defensive back Pat Richardson (Eliot, ME/Marshwood) had 10 tackles, including four solos.

UMass Dartmouth dropped to 1-2 with the loss, while Maine Maritime improved to 2-0 with the victory. The Corsairs will visit Plymouth State next Saturday, while the Mariners will host Fitchburg State.
