CASTINE, ME-Host Maine Maritime scored 35 points in the second half and went to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's football team, 42-7, in a New England Football Conference crossover game at Ritchie Field Saturday afternoon.

The teams were scoreless until Matt Rende connected with Nic Bourassa on a 27-yard touchdown pass with 3:33 remaining in the first half.

But the Mariners on the first play of the third quarter on an 84-yard run by Rende, then again on Rende's one-yard run with 8:58 remaining in the period.

Bourassa bolted 26 yards for a score early in the fourth quarter to make it 28-0. Rende and Bill Wetherbee added scoring runs later in the period to close out the scoring.

The Corsairs were forced to punt on all five of their first half possessions. But their defense made several big plays, stopping the Mariners on downs at their own seven-yard line in the first quarter when sophomore linebacker Jack Brown (Milton, MA/Milton HS) and freshman defensive lineman Dante Davis (Brookline, MA/Brookline HS) stopped Rende for a three-yard gain, They did it again when they forced a Rende incompletion and took over at their own 28 yard line with 8:33 left in the first half.

"It was a disappointing loss, but Maine Maritime is a good football team," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Mark Robichaud. "We played great in the first half. They scored late in the first half on a ball that was tipped by one of our defenders, and they caught it for a touchdown. In the second half, they hit a lot of big plays, and we didn't execute offensively. We held them down in the first half, but they came back and made some adjustments, and hit some big plays. We have to keep going and get ready for a big game next weekend."

MMA outgained UMD, 645 yards to 237, picking up 559 yards on the ground. Sophomore quarterback Patrick Orlando (Manchester, MA/Essex HS/Saint Anselm) completed 12 of 29 passes for 118 yards, and also led the Corsairs in rushing with 74 yards on 11 carries. Jim Bower was one of three Mariners to gain over 100 yards on the ground, rushing 25 times for 179 yards. Rende gained 169 yards in 16 carries, while Bill Wetherbee carried three times for 120 yards.

Senior linebacker Mike Fraser (Peabody, MA/Wrentham HS/Saint Anselm) made 11 tackles for the Corsairs, including six solo stops, while junior defensive back Ross O'Toole (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) had 10 stops, including one for lost yardage. Wade Mondoux made 11 tackles for MMA.

The Corsairs fell to 1-2 with the defeat, while the Mariners improved to 2-0 with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Plymouth State for homecoming next Saturday.
