Danko Leads Golf To 6th Place Finish At ECAC's
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior Pete Danko (Norton, Mass.) shot a 79 on the final day of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Men's Golf Championship this afternoon at the Crumpin Fox Golf Club to lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to a sixth place finish.
Middlebury College captured the team championship with combined two-day score of 635 to outdistance runner up Western New England University by 13 strokes. Elms College (651) and Endicott College (652) finished ahead of the Corsairs (655) in the 14-team field.
Danko completed the 36-hole competition with a combined score of 156 to place fourth overall in the 70-person field. The Norton, Mass. product shot the sixth best round of the day to finish in a tie with Johnson & Wales' Sam Parella.
Senior Brendan Kelleher (Hopedale, Mass.) was the second UMass Dartmouth student-athlete and 15th overall to enter the clubhouse, carding a 79 on Day 2. He shaved four shots off his Round 1 total to file a combined score of 162. Classmate Brandon Oldham (Mattapoisett, Mass.) registered rounds of 81 and 84 to place 25th in the individual standings.
Sophomore Sean Griffith (Bourne, Mass.) knocked six strokes off this opening round by posting an 83, while freshman Nick Valm (Dartmouth, Mass.) rounded out the Corsair contingent with a 100.
Nichols College's Colin Whitney won the individual title with a combined score of 153, edging Middlebury College's Fitz Bowen by one stroke. Western New England's Patrick Donahue placed third with a 155.
UMass Dartmouth returns to action at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships on October 19 at Johnson & Wales University. The two-day championship will conclude on October 20.
