WARWICK, R.I. -- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth opened the spring portion of its 2014 schedule with a second place performance at the Rhode Island College Invitational this afternoon at the Valley Country Club.
The Corsairs shot a combined 322 on Day 2 to overtake Endicott College and Husson University to finish runner up to the hosts, Rhode Island College.
In his first collegiate golf match, freshman transfer Mike Byron (Bourne, Mass.) tied for fifth place with three other student-athletes with a combined score of 157. Senior Brandon Oldham (Mattapoisett, Mass.) shot a 79 on Day 1 and an 80 the following day to finish in ninth for UMass Dartmouth. After a shaky opening round, senior captain Brendan Kelleher (Hopedale, Mass.) bounced back and posted a second round total of 78 to tie Byron for the team's lowest score of the day. Classmate Pete Danko (Norton, Mass.) remained consisted over the two-day invitational, recording an 81 in both outings, while sophomore Sean Griffith (Bourne, Mass.) tallied a combined score of 165 to round out the Corsairs.
