NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's golf team finished Day 1 of the Westport Hampton Inn Invitational at the Allendale Country Club in sixth place out of the 18-team field.
The Corsairs compiled a team score of 326, sandwiching the hosts between Husson University (322) and Johnson and Wales (328). Endicott College and Salem State University tied for first after the opening day of the tournament with scores of 315, while Rhode Island College trailed in third place (318) and Amherst College followed in fourth (320).
Freshman Mike Byron (Bourne, Mass.) shot a 78, recording the best performance of the day for UMass Dartmouth. Senior Brandon Oldham (Mattapoisett, Mass.) and sophomore Sean Griffith (Bourne, Mass.) each tallied a Day 1 score of 82, while senior Pete Danko (Norton, Mass.) stroked an 84 for the Corsairs. Senior Brendan Kelleher (Hopedale, Mass.) struggled through the opening nine, but bounced back in the back half of the course for a total of 86.
Day 2 of the Westport Hampton Inn Invitational will continue on Saturday, as the teams are scheduled to tee off at 1 p.m.
