NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Blue Team combined to shoot the second lowest Day 2 round to place third this afternoon at the 2014 Westport Hampton Inn Invitational at Allendale Country Club, while the Gold Team moved up one spot into 11th.
The UMass Dartmouth Blue team rallied on the final day of competition to overtake three teams to place third overall, just two strokes behind runner up Rhode Island College (639). Amherst College captured the team championship with the lowest score in the field (634), fueled by Josh Moser, who tallied a 152 (79 and 73) to win the individual championship. The UMass Gold team registered a combined score of 691, positioning them between Suffolk University and Roger Williams University.
Freshman Mike Byron (Bourne, Mass.) and senior Pete Danko (Norton, Mass.) were the catalysts for the Blue team. After producing a 78 in Day 1, Byron finished tied for seventh with a final score of 159. Danko stroked a UMass Dartmouth best, 76, in the latter day to trail Byron by one stroke. For the Gold team, freshman Nick Valm played consistent golf, generating an 83 on both days to tie for 27th overall.
The individual highlight of the tournament came when Nick Wage from Nichols College, sank a hole-in-one with a five iron on the 190 yard hole #3.
UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Thursday, April 17, when the Corsairs participate in the Western New England Spring Invitational.
