SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's golf team took third place in the nine-team field at the Western New England Invitational on Thursday afternoon, marking their third consecutive third place finish this season.
The Corsairs finished with a team score of 309, edging out Salem State by one struck. Endicott College placed in second (305) and Western New England defended their home course with a 302.
Freshman Mike Byron (Bourne, Mass.) and seniors Brendan Kelleher (Hopedale, Mass.) and Pete Danko (Norton, Mass.) paced the UMass Dartmouth squad. Kelleher led the Corsairs with a score of 75 and shot even par on the back nine, including a pair of birdies. Byron finished one stroke behind Kelleher and shot 3-under on the front nine, highlighted by an eagle on the par 5 ninth hole. Danko stroked a 77 to finish tied for ninth place in the individual standings.
UMass Dartmouth returns to the links tomorrow when the Corsairs compete in the Johnson and Wales Spring Invitational at the Cranston Country Club.
