MIDDLEBURY, VT-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's golf team posted a team score of 324 on their first day of the 2011 season, Saturday at Middlebury's Duke Nelson Invitational, played at the par-71 Ralph Myhre Golf Course. The Corsairs are tied for 15th in the 24-team field. Skidmore is in first place with a score of 206.
Senior George Gillmore (Cotuit, MA/Barnstable HS/Fairfield) shot an 80, senior Nick Jagoe (Westport, MA/Westport HS) and junior John Coucci (Mattapoisett, MA/Old Rochester Regional HS) each came in at 81, junior Matt Connolly (Lynnfield, MA/Lynnfield HS) shot an 82, and freshman Max Omer(Longmeadow, MA/ Longmeadow HS came in at 88.
"You have to be in the right frame of mind for tournament golf, and we were in it for about 14 holes," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Joel Baptista. "Some of our people didn't finish as strong as they could have. We need to be focused for all 18 holes. Max struggled on the front nine, but came back and was three over on the back nine, and that was his first collegiate match. Hopefully, we can come back tomorrow, fix some of the mistakes we made today, and score a little lower."
The tournament will conclude Sunday.
