MIDDLEBURY, VT-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's golf team is in fourth place in a 24-team field after the first day of play in their first golf tournament of the fall 2010 season, Middlebury's Duke Nelson Invitational at the par-71 Ralph Myhre Golf Course.
The Corsairs shot a team score of 307, placing them two strokes behind Manhattanville and Saint Anselm and one stroke behind Rensselaer.
Sophomore Matt Connolly (Lynnfield, MA/Lynnfield HS) led the Corsairs with a 75 and is one stroke off the lead. Junior Scott Woodacre (Westborough, MA/Westborough HS) and Brandon Oldham (Mattapoisett, MA/ORR/Allegheny College/Bristol CC) each shot 76, freshman Billy Guilford (Halifax, MA/Silver Lake Regional HS) shot an 80 and junior Nick Jagoe (Westport, MA/Westport HS) shot an 81.
"For our first round out of the gate, I was very pleased," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Joel Baptista. "I think 307 is one of the lowest scores we've had as a team, but tomorrow we have to go out and put together another good, solid round. Matt Connolly had a great tryout and a great week of practice, and it carried over. Brandon is off to a very good start, and Billy had an outstanding round for the first round of his collegiate career. It was a great team effort."
The tournament will conclude Sunday.
