GOLF WINS GNAC CHAMPIONSHIP, HEADS FOR NCAAS
PROVIDENCE, RI-For the first time since the 1977 season, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's golf team is headed to the national tournament.
The Corsairs shot a team score of 320 for a 36-hole total of 652 and finished 16 strokes ahead of defending champion Johnson & Wales to win the Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship, which concluded Sunday at the par-72 Triggs Memorial Golf Course.
Host Rhode Island College was third at 674; St. Joseph's (Maine) was fourth at 688, Southern Maine fifth at 695, Emmanuel sixth at 721 and Suffolk seventh 739.
For UMass Dartmouth, sophomore Matt Connolly (Lynnfield, MA/Lynnfield HS) shot a 78 for a two-day total of 157 and finished one stroke behind the medalist, Joe Connor of Johnson % Wales. Junior George Gillmore (Cotuit, MA/Barnstable HS/Fairfield) shot an 83 for a total of 164 and finished fifth, junior Nick Jagoe (Westport, MA/Westport HS) shot an 80 for 165 and was sixth, sophomore Brandon Oldham (Mattapoisett, MA/ORR HS/Allegheny/BCC) shot a 79 for 167 and tied for seventh, and senior Scott Woodacre (Westborough, MA/Westborough HS) shot an 85 for 172 and tied for 16th. The Corsairs' Sunday round was the best round of the tournament by any team.
"Needless to say, I'm absolutely ecstatic," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Joel Baptista. "This is what you play for all year, this was our goal, and anything short would have been a disappointment. Our team knew what was at stake, and they came to play. Matt Connolly had an outstanding season, Nick Jagoe proved again why he is a captain, leading by example, and the other guys on the team feed off that. We have a deep team, everyone pushed each other in practice, and it made everyone better. It's going to be an honor to represent the university and the GNAC at the national championships."
The Corsairs will return to action next spring before they head for the NCAAs, scheduled for May 10th-13th at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, NC.
