GREENSBORO, NC-After playing a pair of practice rounds, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's golf team will begin play Tuesday in the NCAA Division III Championships.
The Corsairs will play the West Course at the Grandover resort Tuesday, and then play the East Course Wednesday before the field of 40 teams is reduced to 15 for the final two rounds.
"Today was our practice round on the West Course and we'll be back there to start the tournament," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Joel Baptista. "We hit the ball pretty well today, but there was a stretch where the heat got to us a little bit, and we started to wear down towards the end of the round. We have to stay hydrated. We've had two good practice rounds, and, like the other teams, we're ready to get started."
Playing in the tournament will be different than playing the practice round. "When we tee it up tomorrow, with players from other schools, and galleries watching, we'll see how we respond to that," said Baptista. "We need to realize that we belong here. We earned our way here, and we can compete."
UMass Dartmouth will compete against the top teams in the nation. "The competition will be very stiff, and we'll have to play some of the best golf we've played all year," said Baptista. "We'll have to just really go out and let things unfold, and try not to get caught up with being in the championships. We need to stay focused for all 18 holes."
